Flag Football
The Bourbon Street Hurricanes’ tough defense held back the Brians’ American Eatery Bears in a 28-13 victory in the San Diego American Flag Football’s season opening game played at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.
The Hurricanes got on the board first with a touchdown pass from quarterback Shon Anderson to Anthony Defracisci and another connection to Kyle Hook.
Bears quarterback Jared Duncan slowed what would have been a Hurricanes rout with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Jim Giacobbe. Later in the half, Duncan connected again for a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jason Wang.
Trailing by only one touchdown in the middle of the second half, the Bears took a chance and went for it on fourth down and 15 in their own territory, but they came up short. The Hurricanes then came up with another quick touchdown. Brad Taylor intercepted a pass by Duncan, which sealed the Hurricanes’ victory.
Led by quarterback Dave Digiacomo, the Pecs Gators secured a 26-16 victory over the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys in a tight defensive game. The Cowboys’ John Hernandez predicted a tough game and was encouraged after Jason Hefley scored a touchdown, cutting the Gators lead to a touchdown late in the first half.
“Girl, as tough as their defense seems, our offense has to start thinking ‘free Prada shoes’ with every touchdown from this point on. It’s just a matter of two snaps up and a ‘bring it on’ attitude,” Hernandez said.
The Gators’ Jeff Gazaway scored two critical touchdowns along with Hawaiian native Ty Law and John Bailey to keep the tired Cowboys’ defense out on the field.
Digiacomo gave credit to the Cowboys’ defense. He said they played their hearts out, “like a bunch of mad-dogs coming after me.”
Rugby
The San Diego Surfer’s Women’s Rugby Club improved their record to 4-3 in the Women’s Club division of the Southern California Rugby Football Union as they slipped past the Scottsdale Lady Blues with a close 12-10 victory. Nicole Grable and Candace Heffa Jackman both scored tries, while Michelle Beebe kicked a conversion.
Assistant Coach Bruce Worman said excellent goal-line defense and several key steals at the end of the match sealed the win for the Surfers. Their next match is this Sunday, April 10, at Robb Field in Ocean Beach at 11:00 a.m.

Softball
The America’s Finest City Softball League’s Moby Dick’s Blowholes and the Bourbon Street Gamecocks faced off against each other tied for first place in the Open D Division with identical 4-0 records.
In a close battle, the Blowholes were able to sneak past the Gamecocks 10-5.
“This was definitely the most competitive game we played this season so far,” said Blowholes Manager Brian Schultz.
Schultz noted Michael McCarthy’s consistent and excellent pitching, sharp plays by shortstop Dino Danner and good hitting by Eric Maitland.
Stellar defensive plays helped the Blowholes in a 15-2 rout of the Rough Riders. Larry Tow contributed a diving catch for a fly ball at first base. The Blowholes improved to 6-0 and Rough Riders are winless at 0-6.
Brians’ American Eatery/Pecs came up with a 15-9 win over The Loft. Brians’/Pecs Coach George Biagi said great pitching, clutch hitting and strong defense led to their strongest showing so far this season.
“This was a true team effort that will hopefully carry over into next week’s Saguaro Cup Tournament in Phoenix,” Biagi said.
In Women’s Division action, Patti’s Fit 2B Tyed remained undefeated in the A/B Division, improving to 6-0 with a 15-4 win over On the Run and a close 9-4 win over Abberation.
Fit 2B Tyed pounded out 25 hits against On the Run with Chasm Bone contributing two home runs and two doubles. Liz Apodaca went a perfect 4-4.
Aberration kept things close as the score was tied until the bottom of the seventh inning, but Fit 2B Tyed put together some key hits on their way to another victory.
