If you like cute, throwaway comedies, Fever Pitch will fill the bill nicely. It’s about a Boston Red Sox fanatic who meets a woman who doesn’t share his passion.

Jimmy Fallon’s mission is to win Drew Barrymore over and turn her into at least a moderately fanatical Sox fan. To everyone’s surprise, it actually works, and of course they fall in love. The nicest thing you can say about Fever Pitch is that even though you know where it’s going, you never feel insulted by it. It’s cute, lightweight and definitely worth seeing. I’ve never seen Fallon and Barrymore so relaxed.

Well, Woody Allen has done it again: blown a major opportunity to create what could have been a fascinating, entertaining story about identity confusion and given us a bunch of pointless blather.

Allen keeps it all low-key, but it’s still not enough to save what turns out to be an overblown, self-important exercise in literary masturbation.

The acting is cute, but Allen has nothing new to say, the jokes are stale, and I was so confused that I thought Melinda and Melinda were twins. This is definitely cut-rate Allen.

Well, it’s been a long, mostly enjoyable ride. I’ve had fun plowing through hundreds and hundreds of movies and being exposed to new things. I wish my successor all the luck in the world and I’m sure he will be a worthy contributor to Gay & Lesbian Times.
