In Open Division D action on Sunday, April 17, Moby Dick’s Blowholes continued to win and improved their record to 8-0 with a 19-9 win over Baja Betty’s Double D’s and a close 7-6 win over Gay & Lesbian Times/Alano Club.
Although Baja Betty’s is a relatively new team, they continue to improve as the season progresses. They jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead after one inning on some strong hitting, forcing several Blowholes errors.
In the second inning the Blowholes started to put their offense together with a solo homerun by Carlos Ramón. Brian Schultz capped off the inning with a three-run homerun.
After making a few defensive adjustments, the Blowholes started shutting down Baja Betty’s offense, culminating in a rare triple play by Ramón, Terry Harrison and Larry Tow – a left-field second-base, first-base combination.
Kirk Blaylock brought in seven RBIs in his last two at-bats. The Blowholes ended up outscoring Baja Betty’s 17-1 after the first inning.
Strong defensive plays by both teams kept the scoring low in the second meeting between the Blowholes and the Gay & Lesbian Times/Alano Club. There were several scoreless innings throughout the game.
GLT/Alano Club had some new players hit well, making the Blowholes sweat it out the entire game. The Blowholes’ Eric Maitland and Blaylock hit well during the game to keep things close. Selisa Lim and Ramón scored critical runs in the last inning to give the Blowholes a three-run lead with Alano Club’s last at-bat remaining.
After GLT/Alano Club scored two runs with their first two batters to close their deficit to one run, the Blowholes answered back with two consecutive outs. Alano kept driving, though, having two more consecutive hits in a row with the tying runner at third base and the winning runner at first base.
The Blowholes managed to get their last batter out when she grounded to pitcher Mike McCarthy, who lofted the ball effortlessly to Larry Tow at first base for the final out of the game. The Blowholes improved to 8-0.
Women’s A/B Division’s Patti’s Fit 2B Tyed continued their winning ways with non-division wins over two C Rec I teams to remain undefeated at 8-0.
Fit 2B Tyed completely dominated Blood, Sweat and Beer in a 22-3 win with an impressive 29 hits on April 17. There was no turning back after scoring 11 runs in the first inning alone.
Left center fielder Chasm Bone led the game off with a homerun. Then, in her second trip up to the plate in the first inning, she hit yet another homerun, this time with the bases loaded for a grand slam to right center field. Bone ended the game with six RBIs and went 3-for-4 for Fit 2B Tyed.
First base player Kari Rocco hit a perfect 4-for-4 while Tera Longest went 3-for-4, blasting two singles and a triple for four RBIs. Second base player Missile Johnson also went 3-for-4, while right fielder Carmen Soikowski went 3-for-4 with a triple.
In a much closer contest, Fit 2B Tyed was still able to fire off 17 hits in a 13-5 win over Ono Sushi Sib Tech.

The Sparks beat Momentum 1-0 on April 10 but lost their match this past week
Bone again fired off with another homerun, going 2-for-2 in the game. Johnson led off the third inning with a solo homerun. Kari Rocco, Marge Mongolo, Longest, Carmen Soikowski and Diana Emerson all went 2-for-3
Flag football
The San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) played some close competitive games last Saturday, April 16, at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.
In the first game, the Bourbon Street Hurricanes improved to 2-0 with a close 27-20 victory over Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys.
Although the Hurricanes had a halftime lead, the Cowboys’ Jason Hefley’s sound aggressiveness and Alex Figueroa’s stout defensive rushing caused the Hurricanes to struggle in the first half.
Cowboys quarterback and captain Vance Doherty passed well in the second half with key touchdown passes to Michael Anderson, Shon Anderson and Ron Addeo in the final minutes of the game to make it close. The Hurricanes’ Michael Jazmin made a final touchdown pass to clinch the win for the Hurricanes.
In the second game, the Pecs Gators squeezed out an 18-13 victory over the Brians’ American Eatery Bears, improving their record to 2-0.
Despite his calm and collectiveness, Gators quarterback Jared Duncan simply couldn’t penetrate a difficult Gators secondary despite the emergence of the Bears’ Brian Wilburn and a revamped Bears defense. Only leading by a few points, Duncan threw an errant pass into the hands of Jason Wang. Following excellent blocking by Joe Coleburn and Tom Mullen, Wang ran for a touchdown return that immediately took the lead for the Bears.
However, the referees called it back on a very questionable illegal block on the return at the spot of the foul, which was around the Bears’ own 30-yard line. The Gators stymied the Bears from driving for the go-ahead touchdown.
SDAFFL games will be played this Saturday, April 23, at Linda Vista Recreational Center at 11:00
Soccer
Coming off of a 1-0 win over Momentum April 10, Sparks Soccer Club was looking for a second consecutive win, and they almost got one. Although they scored first and controlled much of the first half, it was not enough, as TDAC Loko Jr’s put together two goals in the second half to come away with a narrow 2-1 victory.
Eddie Pappert scored the Sparks’ lone goal off an assist from Jeremy Salas during the first half.
“We were missing three of our regulars and were also impacted by the loss of one of the key midfield players [Spencer Sam], due to injury upon colliding with an opposing player, within the first 15 minutes,” said Sparks Coach Leslie Randolph.
Despite the loss, the Sparks remain in second place in the San Diego County Soccer League’s Third Division, with a 9-4-1 record behind RBFC. TDAC Loko Jr’s improved to 7-3-3 overall with the win.
The Sparks’ next game will be against ISC Morteza at 9:00 a.m. at Robb Field in Ocean Beach this Sunday, April 24.
