Q&A: Casper Andreas, director of Slutty Summer
Published Thursday, 21-Apr-2005 in issue 904
Screens Saturday, April 30, at 9:00 p.m.
Gay & Lesbian Times: Where did you come up with the fabulous title Slutty Summer?
Casper Andreas: Actually the title and the whole story of the film just came to me one day as I was on my way to the gym. Years ago I waited tables at an outdoor summer restaurant in Manhattan and I thought, “What a great set-up for a romantic comedy!” One guy who worked at the restaurant always used to tell me about his latest conquest, and actually uttered the line that I ended up giving Luke in the film: “This is gonna be one slutty summer!”
GLT: The film brings up the issue of monogamy. Do you think gay men in general must find a different way to look at relationships?
CA: Someone said gay relationships are different because there is more testosterone. This is a major theme of the film – is it possible for gay men to be monogamous? Personally I don’t think “gay men in general” need to do anything. I think everybody – gay or straight – needs to think about how they want to live their lives, and why. Everybody should decide for themselves who they want to be and become, and then make their choices accordingly. What’s right for one person isn’t right for another. But because something isn’t right for you doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with it.
GLT: Why should people choose to check out Slutty Summer at FilmOut?
CA: I hope people will check it out because it’s a fun, enjoyable film that’s really made with [the] gay audience in mind. I think a lot of people should be able to relate to the characters, because it’s about being young and gay in a big city. We are also going to have a few of the cast members at the screening in San Diego.
GLT: What are you planning to make next? Slutty Fall?
CA: I have actually written a script for another gay romantic comedy together with Jesse Archer, who plays Luke, that is somewhat of a sequel to Slutty Summer. The working title was Sluttier Summer, but now we have decided to call it A Four Letter Word.
