San Diego LGBT Pride extends photo contest deadline
San Diego LGBT Pride has extended its submission deadline to Friday, May 6, for a photo contest that focuses on a recently installed bench in Balboa Park commemorating the organization. The contest gives participants a chance at winning passes to this year’s festival, as well as other prizes. Winning photographs will also be featured in Pride’s 2005 Souvenir Program.
The rules are simple: Search and locate the Pride bench along the walkway by the Timken Museum of Art and then creatively incorporate it into a digital or regular hardcopy photograph. The bench cannot be moved or marked in anyway.
The bench was purchased by Pride and given to the city last year as a show of appreciation for its support. It features a brass plate inset of the Pride logo and a dedication plaque to the San Diego community.
Five winning photos will be selected, which will also be displayed on Pride’s website. Additionally, each winner will receive a pair of weekend passes to this summer’s Pride festival, plus a T-shirt and hat.
Photo submissions must be received by May 6. They can be emailed to director@sdpride.org or sent by regular mail to: Photo Contest, P.O. Box 34352, San Diego, CA, 92163.

Scouting For All at EarthFair 2005
Scouting For All San Diego will have a booth at San Diego EarthFair 2005, taking place in Balboa Park on Sunday, May 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
SFA members will speak to the public about the organization’s ongoing efforts to encourage the Boy Scouts of America to include as participating members all youth and adult leaders, regardless of their spiritual belief, gender or sexual orientation.
“All we’re asking is that the Boy Scouts of America turn back the clock to a time when local troop leadership made membership decisions for both their own local leaders and local youths,” said Howard Menzer, southwestern director of Scouting For All.
“The now blanket discriminatory membership policy dictated by the BSA national headquarters in Irving, Tex., five years ago bars all gay and atheist youth, youth with gay or atheist parents and gay and atheist leaders. Hate wastes so much energy and accomplishes nothing.”
SFA also will distribute educational literature, give away SFA T-shirts and badges with requests for donations and encourage visitors to sign petitions supporting the organization’s cause.

Mama’s Kitchen’s 14th annual Mama’s Day
On Friday, May 6, Mama’s Kitchen teams up with 65 of San Diego’s finest restaurants for Mama’s Day 2005 “Mama Goes Wild.” The 14th annual celebration will feature entertainment, a silent auction and an Absolut martini bar. This year, dozens of San Diego’s most well-known celebrity chefs will provide guests with a culinary adventure, showcasing their most popular and lavish specialties to help support Mama’s mission: providing food and nutrition to people affected by HIV/AIDS throughout San Diego County.
It is estimated that in San Diego County alone over 5,400 individuals and families are struggling to survive with AIDS, and an estimated 15,000 people are infected with HIV.
Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund, a food bank for people with AIDS, discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal-delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious food. Today, Mama’s Kitchen prepares and delivers three meals a day for every day of the week to about 300 men, women and children affected by AIDS in San Diego County.
“We are looking forward to Mama’s Day,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen. “Last year’s event proceeds provided over 71,000 meals to San Diegans in need, and we hope to exceed those proceeds this year. The success of this event is directly attributed to the overwhelming support from the San Diego public and our corporate sponsors.”
This year’s lead sponsor is SAIC. Other sponsors include Sycuan Resort & Casino, Union Bank of California, San Diego Magazine, Hyatt Regency La Jolla, Neiman Marcus, Absolut Vodka and Pfizer La Jolla.
Mama’s Day 2005 begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Tickets are $125, with all proceeds benefiting Mama’s Kitchen. For further information or to purchase tickets, call Richard De Lancey at (619) 233-6262 ext 104.
