Division races heat up in softball league play
Aberration, Powerhouse tied for first in women’s B; Moby’s still leading in Division 3

This weekend, Hourglass Park in Mira Mesa was the place to see two of the top women’s teams in softball face off. In the Women’s B Division it was number one Powerhouse against the challenging Aberration team, who were in second place. Aberration kept things close in the first part of the game, scoring three runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-7 lead. In the fifth and final inning Powerhouse managed to post a single run on the board and Aberration took the game, 10-8.
“We had good fielding out there,” Hollye Jones of Aberration said following the game. “We just kind of took them down with our hitting. Powerhouse is a good team. They started out a little slow and we took advantage of that and just placed some hits where they weren’t at. We did a pretty good job and we are pretty proud of ourselves.”
Both Aberration and Powerhouse drew forfeits in their other game of the day against Ashley’s A’s. The win moves Aberration into a tie with Powerhouse for first place going into the Memorial Day Weekend break.
In other women’s division play, The Ono Sushi Sliders beat up on The Boxing Club, beating them, 17-5. However, the Sliders couldn’t dent the undefeated Division A Moby Dick’s women’s team. Moby’s beat the Sliders, 22-8, and The Boxing Club, 20-5.
In the Women’s C Division, Hairspray is still clinging to the top spot, with less than a half game lead over Clean Sweep. This weekend Hairspray picked up a 5-4 win over Creative Futons and an 18-2 win against Mel’s Team to improve their record to 9-4. Clean Sweep is hot on their tail with a 10-5 record, beating The Flame, 19-0, and Hamburger Mary’s, 11-6, this week.
Accurate standings and scores were not available from the league for the Open D4, D5 and D6 divisions, but in a key game in D3 Moby Dick’s avenged their only loss so far this season — to the Abbey — by beating them 16-11. Moby’s also picked up a win against Hamburger Mary’s, beating them 12-3 to maintain first place in D3. Standouts for Moby’s included Ray Medierus, who had a homer against the Abbey, and Greg Harpeneau, who went 5/6 for the day.

The Abbey dropped the ball on their second game of the day, against Shameless, who came from behind in the last inning to take a two-run lead while holding The Abbey to one run to win the game, 12-11.
“We played well. We were kind of flat the entire game but we came back in the last inning and took a lead and held them,” Michael Triompo of Shameless said following the game.
Also in D3, holding their position in second place and just one game out of first, Brians’/PECS Bears defeated Interactive Male, 12-5, and The Center Starz, 15-8, with Brent DeVarne, Todd Casagrande and Steve Aguire all hitting homers in the game against The Starz.
“We started off slow, but we are definitely picking up momentum,” Mark Lister of the Bears said of the team’s performance this season. “Everyone’s hitting from the top to the bottom of the lineup; we like our chances.”
The top two teams in D2, Extasis and Daniel Greer, both took on The Loft this weekend and beat them, 13-7 and 10-5, respectively. Greer did not have a second game, but Extasis went on to play the undefeated D1 Hitmen and lost to them, 9-6. The loss to the Hitmen knocks Extasis out of their first place tie with Greer.
Softball will be taking a break this weekend so that teams can travel to Memorial Day tournaments in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but league play will resume the following weekend at the fields in both Poway and Mira Mesa.
