Gay? Trust me, it’s all in your head
Published Thursday, 12-May-2005 in issue 907
Despite what many ex-gay organizations have been trumpeting, it turns out Jesus Christ may not be able to cure us from homosexuality after all. Sure, finding Jesus has proven easier than the answer to the age-old question of nature vs. nurture, but it turns out researchers are now saying there is evidence that homosexuality is a physical trait and not learned behavior.
Perhaps an explanation for why so many of us call each other “girl,” when exposed to certain hormones, including testosterone, the brains of gay men clearly reacted more like women’s brains, researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, concluded.
You see, in our brains there is a specific region that is responsible for eliciting sexual responses. When straight men take a whiff of testosterone, for example, this region of the brain is not activated, but when straight women and gay men are exposed to testosterone, SCHWING! Both reacted similarly, proving that sexuality is hardwired, not something we’ve learned from an overbearing mother or that often-blamed fatherless household.
In response, Dr. Richard Cohen, president of P-FOX (Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays – no joke) has already come forward to refute this new evidence saying, “If a genetic basis for homosexuality is proven some day, it would be like a genetic predisposition to alcoholism – an inclination that a person would rather resist than indulge.”
Granted, many of us get “gayer” the more we drink, but homosexuality is not a disease like alcoholism, and this unfounded link only further perpetuates the negative stigma associated with homosexuality.
It’s thinking like Dr. Cohen’s that bars us from marriage, keeps us from adoption and reinforces a legacy of violence and discrimination toward our community. How much wasted breath have we expelled trying to convince others that our lifestyle isn’t a choice? Maybe now, with the help of science, we won’t have to.
