I was usually the only one on the far side of the room, literally and figuratively, saying there is no such thing as objectivity. Once you acknowledge that, you move on. You work harder to make sure you are not always quoting gay white men on a story; you make sure that just because you know the head of an agency, it doesn’t mean you can’t write a critical report on a scandal; just because you are on a board of directors, that doesn’t mean you can’t have someone cover that group – just make sure your readers know, when it matters, what those conflicts are.”
