The top two teams in each of America’s Finest City Softball League’s (AFCSL) divisions receive automatic berths into the Gay Softball World Series, which will be hosted here in San Diego this year, Aug. 15-20.
Moby Dick’s Blowholes posted two more wins this past Sunday to remain in first place in the Open D Division with a 15-1 record.
The Blowholes squeezed out a 12-10 win over Bandits ROK on an extremely hot morning at Mira Mesa’s Hourglass Park. The third-place Bandits, who handed the Blowholes their only loss of the season a month ago, were charged to pull off an upset and started off strong with three runs in their first at-bat.
At their first at-bat, each Blowholes player hit, scored or had an RBI in a 10-run offensive explosion. Dino Danner, Frank Aguirre and Ryan Doherty all had hits in the second inning while two more runs were scored, increasing the Blowholes’ lead to 12-3.
In the final inning the Blowholes defense began to deteriorate. The Bandits scored seven more runs before the Blowholes managed to produce the final outs.
In another close game, the Blowholes got past the Gay & Lesbian Times/Alano Club 7-4. In their previous two games against GLT/Alano Club, the Blowholes squeaked out close 7-6 wins so they were in for a tough game.
In the first inning the Blowholes’ Kirk Blaylock managed to hit a solid double in his first at-bat. Blowholes pitcher Mike McCarthy produced a solid hit to bring Blaylock home for a 1-0 lead.
Selisa Lim and Schultz both got hits in the second inning to produce another run. In the third inning, the GLT took a 3-2 lead on solid hits.
Under pressure, the Blowholes’ bats miraculously exploded with hits and aggressive base-running by Blaylock, McCarthy, Aguirre, Doherty and Ramón. A final hit by Schultz drove in the fifth run of the inning to give the Blowholes a 7-3 lead. GLT mustered one additional run in their last at-bat.
Later that afternoon the GLT defeated the second-place Bourbon Street Gamecocks 6-4 to improve to 8-8 overall and keep the race for second place in the D Division tight. The Gamecocks retain only a one-game lead (11-5) over the third-place Bandits ROK (10-6).
Fit 2B Tyed continued their dominance in the Women’s Division with a convincing 22-2 non-division win over C Rec I opponent Powerhouse Gym 2 on May 15. Pounding out 33 hits overall, Fit 2B Tyed batted an impressive .733 as a team, scoring four doubles and two triples. They also scored 15 runs in the fifth inning to essentially seal the victory.
“This was a total team effort. Everyone hit the ball extremely well,” said Fit 2B Tyed Coach Tina Prato.
In their second game Fit 2B Tyed received a forfeit win over Peacemakers to remain unbeaten with a perfect 16-0 record.

The San Diego Armada Football Club (SDARFC) lost 27-24 in a close home game against the New York Gotham Knights on May 14. SDARFC led the game going into the second half. It remained close for the entire 80 minutes with both teams capitalizing on errors to produce strong defense and offense.
“The guys did outstanding this weekend. As a coach I could not be more proud of their performance,” said SDARFC Coach Mary Swanstrom.
She credited the team’s hard work all season long and their improved skills.
“What set this weekend apart from our other games was the fact that the backs stepped up to be a major force on the pitch,” said Swanstrom. “They were able to get the ball out to the centers and wings consistently, which allowed us to control the flow of the game. Though most of our scores were by forwards, it was the backs who got us within scoring distance,” she said.
The SDARFC is holding a fundraiser at ReBar this Saturday, May 21.
Flag football
Upsets were rampant during the sixth week of games in the San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) last Saturday, May 14, at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.
The Brians’ American Eatery Bears, who were on a three-game winning streak, watched last-place Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys score 21 unanswered points in the first half to come away with an impressive 21-6 victory, improving their record to 2-4. The Bears fell to 3-3 overall, tied for second-place in the SDAFFL standings.
The Bears’ defense improved in the second half to keep the Cowboys scoreless with the help of a touchdown saving grab from Steve Cramsie. The Bears scored their only touchdown of the day on a long completion downfield by their quarterback.
In the second game, the Pecs Gators upset the Bourbon Street Hurricanes 45-21 in an offensive shootout. The Gators scored fast and early to build a three-touchdown lead, resulting from the power and hands of tight-end Doug Komlenic, who scored on almost every possession.
The Hurricanes fell to 4-2 but still remain in first-place in the SDAFFL’s standing. The Gators improved to 3-3, tied for second-place.
