“I thought it was going to be a little bit bigger deal, but I wasn’t doing it because I wanted it to be a big deal. It was something I tried to do for my parents and for the gay community. They’re a huge part of the population.”
— Cincinnati Reds player Joe Valentine on his recent announcement that he was raised by a lesbian couple, to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, May 2.
“I have not heard of one person that came out of the closet that wishes they could go back in. And that is the key right there – nobody wants to go back in the closet, and have to pretend, and lie, and try to keep track of who you lied to, who you are not out to, what did you say to that one, what did you say to this person, who is this person. I know women that were together for 20 years, and they were rearranging the furniture when the parents came to visit, and the parents knew, and they were still pretending that they didn’t know! It’s such a waste of energy! Use it in a positive way. Go volunteer, go to an animal shelter. Go pick up garbage on the beach for a mile!”
— Tennis legend Martina Navratilova to PlanetOut.com, May 6.
“I am a really typical str8 acting/looking guy that just happens to be attracted to the same.”
— From a Gay.com profile (Cobra82nd) that the Spokesman-Review newspaper said belongs to Spokane, Wash., Mayor Jim West. The paper reported May 5 that West, who has an anti-gay voting record, “has used positions of public trust – as a sheriff’s deputy, Boy Scout leader and powerful politician – to develop sexual relationships with boys and young men.”
“I don’t know what a diva is. I guess it’s a big compliment. I just think of myself as somebody who works hard.”
— Liza Minnelli to the gay newspaper Dallas Voice, April 15.
“He hates us. Really hates us.”
— Pink Triangle Press board member Brenda Cossman on Pope Benedict XVI, writing in the Toronto gay newspaper Xtra!, April 28.
“[Anti-gay crusader] Fred [Phelps] has issues. I just don’t give the man power over anything that I do, say or think. Basically, he is a man lost in a world of hate. I think if he understood how much good he does for us, he would stay at home. We raise money around his appearances now. He’s just so lost.”
— Judy Shepard, Matthew’s mother, to the gay magazine QVegas, May issue.
“George and I are complete opposites – I’m quiet, he’s talkative; I’m introverted, he’s extroverted; I can pronounce nuclear.”
— First Lady Laura Bush at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, April 30.
“One night, after George went to bed, Lynne Cheney, Condi Rice, Karen Hughes and I went to Chippendales. I wouldn’t even mention it except Ruth Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor saw us there. I won’t tell you what happened, but Lynne’s Secret Service code name is now ‘Dollar Bill.’”
— First Lady Laura Bush at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, April 30.
