I want to sincerely apologize to the Log Cabin Republican club, as I was scheduled to be the guest speaker at their monthly meeting but once again my health forced me to cancel….
Robert Gleason for mayor?
Recently, top Democratic donors were invited to the home of prominent attorney Bruce Abrams for a reception to discuss the Democratic Party in San Diego and its future. It was hosted by Jess Durfee, chair of the local Democratic Party, and consultant Ray Drew. I stopped by but had to leave early for another meeting, but it seems there were some lively discussions after I left about finding a more moderate Democrat to run for mayor. Out of this discussion came the name of popular, prominent businessman and former City Commissioner Robert Gleason, who also happened to be in attendance.
So this past weekend, a “trial balloon” was launched by Ray Drew and allies about a possible “Gleason for mayor” campaign. Let me make it very clear that Robert Gleason did not in any way initiate this possible run for mayor… but once it was out, he did state he was interested in the possibility and then started making phone calls.
Personally, I have the highest respect for Robert Gleason, and hope to one day see him as a candidate for office… but I told my friend Robert that I felt this was not the office, time or campaign for him, and that as for Gleason being gay (past president of The Center), many gays and lesbians have already endorsed Donna Frye, Jerry Sanders or Steve Francis.
In such a short campaign of two months, the only person who would have a shot at mayor from our community would be state Senator Chris Kehoe or District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. Robert Gleason informed me he would make his mind up early this week as to whether he would run for mayor…. And now, word is that he may look at running for the County Board of Supervisors! I guess this may leave Todd Gloria as the clear front-runner for our next city councilmember.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral
After the recent death of popular San Diego businessman John McCusker, many forgot that St. Paul’s Cathedral played into this story…. When 98 church doors were closed to the McCusker family, his partner David Trick and our community… this cathedral opened their doors to all of us so that John received a true Christian burial.
In the past weeks, the very Reverend Dean Scott Richardson, clergy and staff of St. Paul’s Cathedral have received honors and recognition from the Nicky Awards (presented by Councilmember Toni Atkins), the Tom Homann Law Association and the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation.

Another hot crowd at Rich’s
This past Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service, I had the honor of presenting a special honor from the city of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission during their Mass in this beautiful cathedral.
In attendance were John and Christine McCusker, David Trick, Johnathan Hale, Linda Childers, Richard Sager and two of my fellow city commissioners.
It was a beautiful service, and many of us will always have a special place in our hearts for St. Paul’s Cathedral…. May God always bless this church and its clergy, staff and congregation.
The Dating Game ‘incident’
Every Monday night at Flicks is the super-popular, all-gay Dating Game (11:00 p.m.), now in its ninth year; “…always a great crowd and a fun time.”
I have been receiving some calls about a recent incident that happened, and questions about a possible racist incident.
As the emcee of this weekly show, I can give you the facts and, to be honest, it seemed more to me to be a racist-on-racist-like incident. The three contestants behind the curtain were young, handsome African-American men in their early 20s…. The “bachelor” was also a handsome African-American man, in his 30s. Soon all three young men made it quite clear that they did not, nor would they ever, “date” another black man. In fact, two said they would not date Latinos.
Soon the three men took it even further with some statements that only white men would do for them, period. The bachelor then walked off the stage, and I don’t blame him. I feel bad about what he was subjected to, but let me make it clear… this was about three African-American contestants and one African-American bachelor, and if their was any racism, it was “self-racism.”
Every Monday night at Flicks we have had all colors and types of men on this stage, but I must say that this is the first such incident of racism among one’s own people that I have ever witnessed!

All Worlds Video’s $20,000 man, Kevin Brown, with Rick Ford.
All Worlds Video’s $20,000 man
All Worlds Video officially launched its 20th anniversary celebration this past week at the Cre Estate in Palm Springs…. Movie star Brad Pitt and others have stayed at this huge estate. It was the day of All Worlds Video’s “20/20 Superstar Sweepstakes”…. Almost 40 video stars showed up for a major film, with no one getting paid but all knowing they had a chance of winning $20,000 in cold, hard cash in a grand-finale drawing at the end of the filming.
I was one of the very limited media invited to this Ben Hur-like major film, with one of the biggest casts ever assembled. There were five camera men, and the official host and emcee of this reality-TV-like show was the legendary international superstar in her own right, Chi Chi LaRue!
There was every type of guy you could imagine in this video to please anyone’s taste. At the end, everyone’s name was put into a Lalique bowl and the excitement mounted as names were called and everyone was waiting to see who would be the last man standing – and would thus become All World’s Video’s $20,000 man…. 23-year-old Kevin Brown from North Carolina turned out to be the winner, and what a nice guy to go along with his breathtakingly all-American good looks.
Kevin told me he would use half the money to continue his college education and would give his mom the other half. Kevin currently stars in Capture, and will be coming out in Jar Head II…. Look for this 20/20 video to come out in the fall, and I predict it will be the most talked `bout film of the year.
While in Palm Springs, my pal Todd Kaufman and I stayed at the famous All Worlds Resort…. I was in the Liberace Suite and Todd was put in the Bette Davis Suite.
