Corday brings anti-tobacco message to youth at Pride festival
Anti-smoking advocate Jennifer Corday and her band want GLBT youth and young adults to know that ‘their pride is not for sale.’ Smart, politically conscious, and passionate, Corday is aware of the damage that big tobacco wreaks upon the GLBT community.
The smoke-free sponsorship of the band CORDAY is part of an effort by the Tobacco-Free Communities Coalition to promote the Pride Festival as a completely smoke-free venue, rejecting all support from tobacco companies and their subsidiaries.
Connecting with teens through her day job as a substitute teacher, many of Corday’s original songs such as “Inhale” are directed at youth issues of smoking and drug use.
Youth and young adults of various ethnicities are targeted by big tobacco companies using GLBT media. The American Lung Association will coordinate an exhibit at this year’s Pride festival to draw attention to Big Tobacco’s targeting of the GLBT community and the role of sponsorship in the tobacco industry’s marketing strategy, gathering opinions and providing opportunities for community members to express their support for a no-tobacco sponsorship policy. For those who want it, a “Last Drag Quit Kit” will be offered.
