GLBT Community Tribute Banquet
City Commissioner Julia Legaspi will be honored at the eighth annual GLBT Community Tribute Banquet, taking place Sunday, June 26, at the Westin Horton Plaza Hotel in downtown San Diego.
“City Commissioner Legaspi will be honored for over two decades of community service as well as for being a long-time advocate for civil rights in San Diego County,” said City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez.
As a community leader in San Diego, Legaspi has been involved in numerous charitable organizations in San Diego, Tijuana, Mexico, and in Cavite, Philippines. Those organizations include the Asian Pacific Islander Community AIDS Project (APICAP), the Imperial Court de San Diego, The Center, the Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner, ACOSIDA AIDS Clinic and the Cavite Association.
Legaspi serves on the Equal Opportunity and Human Relations commissions with the city, as well as on the GLBT Advisory Board of the San Diego Chief of Police, Congressmember Bob Filner and San Diego Mayor Murphy. She is also a member of the executive board of the Imperial Court de San Diego and chairs the Nicole Murray-Ramirez Scholarship Fund.
Legaspi knows the San Diego community and interacts well with all its members regardless of their social position, ethnicity, marital status, religion, sexual orientation or physical challenge, said Jess San Roque, chair of the GLBT Community Tribute Banquet. She is adept at building coalitions to affect the kind of positive changes that are needed in this city, and is skilled at consensus building; and is inclusive of all, he added.
“This is not going to be your ordinary community banquet; it’s going to be a celebration of culture and a wonderful opportunity for people from diverse cultures to sit down for dinner together,” San Roque said. “The atmosphere is joyful as we all share food and entertainment. One feels that this is the way we want our world to be.”
Tickets for the GLBT Community Tribute Banquet are $75 each. Corporate tables (reserved seating for 10) are $750.
The Imperial Court de San Diego sponsors the event.

San Diego Human Dignity Foundation receives largest bequest to date
The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) received a bequest of $150,000 from the estate of Marvin Mayeux. The gift is the largest single gift in the foundation’s eight-year history, and the first legacy gift the foundation has received.
“The foundation is honored and very grateful to be the beneficiary of this significant gift,” said David Pierce, the foundation’s executive director. “Mr. Mayeux has left San Diego’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community a wonderful legacy.”
The foundation’s board of directors voted to add Mayeux’s gift to the organization’s general endowment. The foundation’s endowed funds and donor advised funds, which provide philanthropic support for the local GLBT community, now stand at close to $500,000.
Mayeux, a Hillcrest resident who passed away in February at the age of 84, served as a volunteer and board member for a number of San Diego non-profit organizations, including the AIDS Foundation San Diego, San Diego Hospice, Legal Action Advocates, Auntie Helen’s, Disabled Veterans of America, the Alzheimer’s Foundation and the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.
The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation is the region’s only foundation that focuses its funding efforts exclusively on agencies serving the GLBT community. SDHDF also educates the GLBT community in charitable giving and how to effectively use GLBT dollars to support local causes that have a positive impact. By supporting a network of donors and volunteers, the foundation seeks to create alliances with other foundations to promote shared interests and goals.
Since its inception, the foundation has granted more than $500,000 to San Diego non-profits serving the GLBT comm-unity.Prime Timers annual ‘Out of the Closet’ garage sale
