There are only two regular season games left in the San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) before the championship playoffs on July 9. Three teams were gunning for the top spot in the standings last Saturday, June 4, at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.
In the first game, the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys were hoping to extend their winning streak to two games against the Pecs Gators with an intense offensive strike, but were denied as the Gators eventually came out on top, 19-13.
After a shootout between the two teams, they entered halftime tied at 13-13. In the second half, luck was not on their side as the Cowboys had two touchdowns called back by the officials. The Gators subsequently took advantage by scoring a single touchdown late to win the game. The Gators improved to 4-3 overall while the Cowboys fell to 2-5.
The second game was a battle for first place in the league. The Brians’ American Eatery Bears, not content with second place, came out of the gate with an offensive blitz attack and beat the Bourbon Street Hurricanes, 31-7.
The Bears scored four unanswered touchdowns and blasted out to a 25-0 lead at halftime. Their defense dug in and kept the Hurricanes to only one successful drive for the entire game. The Bears are now in a three-way first-place tie with the Gators and the Hurricanes, all with identical 4-3 records.
Last Sunday, the SDAFFL held a player auction at Bourbon Street to raise money for Gay Bowl V, which comes to San Diego for the first time Oct. 7-9 in Coronado’s Tidelands Park. The auction raised an unprecedented $10,000 for Gay Bowl V.
