This Sunday, June 12, Alex Buchman will be appearing at Obelisk Bookstore to discuss the military erotica titles he edited, Barracks Bad Boys and A Night in the Barracks.

A former U.S. Marine who served during the first Gulf War and was honorably discharged, Buchman has since turned to books, his first being A Night in the Barracks: Authentic Accounts of Sex in the Armed Forces (Haworth), topping the Washington Blade’s best-seller list, which is based on gay and independent bookstore sales nationwide. A Night in the Barracks was also nominated by Susie Bright for inclusion in her Best American Erotica series.

His books explore accounts of sex that result from the famously intense special bond formed in combat, as well as from the parting episodes of military men going off to war. Themes range from young military men opening up emotionally and sexually when suddenly confronted with the possibility of death to memoirs of military mentorship with a sexual angle, and intense homoerotic intimacy between men in combat.

With a third volume on the way, tentatively titled Battle Buddies, Buchman says he’s searching for a collection of “real-life homo-erotica that keeps the reader enraptured, even as it unflinchingly captures the hard, truthful depictions of loss and portrays the true costs of war.”

He assures that his third volume will be no less erotic than A Night in the Barracks or Barracks Bad Boys, but says that, “given the seemingly long-term wartime status for troops in the U.S. military today, the account’s I’m searching for must be fittingly serious.”

Buchman isn’t interested in fantasy fiction, either.

“Military male-male fiction is great entertainment, but there are loads of publications specializing in that,” he says. “The books that I publish are true, unvarnished accounts of life in the military.”
