The San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) held games at the Linda Vista Recreation Center last Saturday, June 11. In the first game, the Bourbon Street Hurricanes came through with a 27-18 win against the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys.
While both defenses were pretty evenly matched, the Hurricanes’ offensive line managed to find and capitalize on the few openings they were given. Most of the scoring came in the second half as both teams ratcheted up their game, trading possession back and forth, resulting in two more touchdowns each. The Cowboys slipped to 2-6, while the Hurricanes improved to 5-3, at first place in the league prior to going into the final week of play before the championship.
The second game pitted Brians’ American Eatery Bears against the Pecs Gators, both with identical 4-3 records. In the end, the Gators walked away with a 20-6 victory over the Bears. Both teams were evenly matched, as their stats would indicate, with a halftime score of 7-6 in favor of the Gators. Most of the second half of the game was spent in the Gators’ end of the field, with both teams trading possession (and interceptions) without gaining much ground in either direction. When the Gators managed to get the ball out of their danger zone, though, it resulted in two additional touchdowns.
With tensions running high toward the end of the game, both teams started to give up more interceptions and penalties as they fought for possession and yardage.
The Gators go into the final week of play at 5-3, tied for first place, while the Bears slip to 4-4.
With only one more week of play before the championships on July 9 (there will be no games over the weekend of July 1), all teams are jockeying for top spots. These final games will be played at the Linda Vista Recreation Center, located at 7064 Levant St., on June 25. At 11:00 a.m., the two top-ranked teams, the Gators and the Hurricanes, will go head to head, followed by the Cowboys and the Bears at 1:00 p.m. Games should be jam-packed with action.

Rugby
The Men’s USA Rugby National Championships were held at the Little Q Rugby Complex at Qualcomm Stadium June 11-12, hosted by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC). About 3,000 people turned out to watch the top teams from across the country compete in Division I, II and III. In the championship matches last Sunday, Haggis (Utah) beat Atlanta Old White 26-17 for the Division II title while Santa Monica defeated Back Bay (Newport Beach) 42-14 in Division I. While not gay teams, they do represent the top teams from across the country and having both top teams in Division I coming from Southern California, definitely illustrates the popularity and competitiveness of rugby in our area.
Members of our local teams, the San Diego Armada Rugby Football Club (SDARFC), San Diego Surfers, OMBAC, Aztecs, Old Aztecs, Gurkhas and Los Angeles Rebellion, as well as players, coaches, referees and supporters from across the country were on-hand to watch some good old-fashioned, hard-hitting rugby.
