About Face, skin care for men and women, offers various types of facials ranging from anti-aging and acne to the basic European facial. Waxing services are also offered for everything from eyebrows, legs, arms and back to Brazilian waxes. Dermalogica is the professional facial product line used, which is also retailed to clients.

“I offer my clients a very relaxing and tranquil environment, and provide a treatment specifically suited to his or her needs,” said licensed esthetician Bill Winfree, owner of About Face. Winfree, a graduate of the Poway Academy of Hair Design, just opened a newer, much larger space at 514 Pennsylvania Ave., and is rapidly building a large clientele base.

Prior to relocating to San Diego three years ago, Winfree served seven years in the Navy, and worked as a travel agent and an outside sales person. He enjoys music, shopping, dancing, traveling and theater. “Not only do I love theater, but I also enjoy being on stage,” he said. “I have been dancing [jazz] in musical theater for about 15 years, and I truly love it. Since starting my skin care business, I haven’t had much time for it, but it is something that I truly enjoy and feel passionate about.”

As his business grows, Winfree plans to contribute monetarily and emotionally to the Hillcrest community, which he said he “loves and provides so much to me.”

Growing up in a small town in central California where there was virtually no gay community, Winfree is happy to be settled in San Diego, where, “Being able to proudly walk through Hillcrest holding my boyfriend’s hand is a wonderful thing. Never could I have gotten away with that in my home town.”
