Published Thursday, 23-Jun-2005 in issue 913
San Diego was well represented in Los Angeles at the Quake and Shake Flag Football tournament last weekend. There were three teams from San Diego: the Hamburger Mary’s Cowboys, Bourbon Street Hurricanes and Brians’ American Eatery Bears. The Hurricanes and the Bears advanced to the championship game for an all-San Diego final.
The semifinal games had the Hurricanes, led by Vance Doherty, beating the L.A. Quake 13-0. In the other semifinal game, the Bears beat the L.A. Shake 26-13 to advance to the finals.
Dave DiGiacomo led the offense all weekend as quarterback for the Bears, while Jorge Lopez and Doug Komlenic led the defense with outstanding defense plays. Coach Richard Williams kept the Bears focused on teamwork, which led them to an undefeated 4-0 record in the tournament. Jared Duncan, Troy Lake and Julius Williams made some critical catches and center Scott Donald made a strong showing as well.
In the finals, the Bears pulled out to a 6-0 lead with a long scramble by Jim Giacobbe, but the Hurricanes pulled ahead in the second half to an 8-6 lead. The Bears’ defense made some key defensive stops to allow DiGiacomo to work his magic with short yardage ball control that led to three more touchdowns for a final score of 25-15.
