Summer in the Park concerts: The University Heights Community Development Corporation kicks off their summer concert series with the country rock band the Nitro Express. Women’s future in Iraq: United States Peace by Peace, an international women’s peace group, hosts Dr. Naba Saleem Hamid, founder of Iraqi New Horizons for Women, at the Joan B. Ray At Night: The second Saturday of every month is Ray At Night on Ray Street in North Park, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Multiple galleries stay open late, featuring live music, beverages and refreshments. The free event is located on Ray Street between University Avenue and North Park Way.
Free Community Ride Day: Sunday, July 10, is the official opening day of the Mission Valley East (MVE) Trolley Extension, and in celebration, there will be music, festivities and free trolley rides on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the four stations along the new Green Line Trolley route. The new extension connects the Mission San Diego Station on the Blue Line and Grossmont Center Station on the Orange Line. (619) 557-4546.
Midnight Madness: As part of its Midnight Madness film series, Ken Cinema presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as the kinky yet endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff. Guantanamo and 9/11: A dramatic reading from the play Guantanamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom by Victoria Brittain and Gillian Slovo starts at 7:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 4190 Front St. The play, a highly acclaimed drama about post-9/11 detainees in Guantanamo, is taken from spoken evidence and weaves together personal stories, legal opinions and political debate, asking how much damage is being done to democratic values during the “war on terror.” Donations are requested. Front and Center Club: Join The Center at Diversionary Theatre for their production of Confessions of a Mormon Boy, Steven Fales’ autobiographical one-man play dealing with his attempts to overcome his sexuality and confront his Mormon upbringing.
