‘Dive into Pride’ second annual pool party
One Source Realty affiliate broker Jim McInnis and Ono Sushi co-owner Paul Somerset, in conjunction with the Greater San Diego Business Association Charitable Foundation, invite you to “Dive into Pride” at the second annual summer pool party, this Saturday, July 16, from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. The party benefits the GSDBA Charitable Foundation’s Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to dynamic gay and gay-friendly scholars.
The foundation will be awarding seven scholarships this year, ranging in value from $500 to $2,000 each, plus the first John McCusker Scholarship ($3,500), which was created this year in memory of McCusker and funded primarily by Ordinary Miracles.
The party will be held poolside at the home of McInnis, which has been featured in San Diego Home & Garden, KUSI News and the La Jolla Garden Club Tour, and was the site for last year’s successful bash.
Ono Sushi will provide the main meal, Bill Bond Catering will provide desserts and drinks, and Chris Shaw of Hamburger Mary’s/Baja Betty’s will provide a hosted bar. Entertainment includes live music by Plastic Explosive, a local DJ spinning dance tunes, a drag show by Tootie, go-go boys and girls, and silent auctions throughout the night.
All of the proceeds from the party will be donated to the GSDBA/Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Community Coalition Lunch
The Center holds its monthly Community Coalition Lunch on Friday, July 15, starting at 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Hear an update on marriage equality in California with featured speakers Thalia Zepatos from The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NLGTF), local attorney and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) board member M.E. Stephens and Dale Kelly Bankhead, public affairs director for San Diego’s ACLU chapter and co-chair of San Diegans Against Marriage Discrimination.

Jean O’Leary memorial service
A service in memory of lesbian activist and Democratic Party leader Jean O’Leary takes place on Sunday, July 24, at 3:00 p.m. O’Leary died at the San Clemente home of Lisa Phelps, her partner of 12 years, on June 4. She had been battling lung cancer for two years.
The service is open to the public and will be held at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, located at the Renberg Theater at 1125 N. McCadden Place in The Village. ‘Red Hot’ women’s nightclub fund-raiser
The Center hosts “Red Hot: A Women’s Nightclub,” on Saturday, July 16, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in their auditorium. The evening will provide San Diego women with an opportunity to socialize and dance in a fun and relaxing environment, and will feature music, door prizes and a no-host bar. Red attire is encouraged. Admission is $5.
The event is sponsored by The Center’s Women’s Resource Center, The Flame and Lavender Lens. The official after-party will take place at The Flame, located at 3780 Park Blvd.

Evening of theater benefits Fraternity House
Enjoy an evening of summer theater by moonlight on Tuesday, July 19, at 8:00 p.m., when Fraternity House, Inc. and Moonlight Stage Productions of Vista collaborate to present The Pirates of Penzance, a new version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s original Broadway musical.
Since 1988, Fraternity House, Inc. has provided San Diego County’s only licensed homes dedicated to serving men and women with HIV/AIDS: Michaelle House in Vista and Fraternity House in Escondido. On July 19, all ticket proceeds from the Moonlight production of The Pirates of Penzance will go directly to fund resident care at Fraternity House and Michaelle House.
Orchestra tickets for the performance cost $25 and include entrance to a private wine and cheese reception that begins at 6:30 p.m. Standard tickets cost $15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All attendees are invited to take part in a 50/50 raffle; the winning ticket will be drawn at intermission.

Second annual Trevor Project fund-raiser
Kathy Kinney from “The Drew Carey Show’ and singer/songwriter Skott Freedman will perform at the second annual Trevor Project fund-raiser “Ole, Trevor,” taking place at Olè Madrid Restaurant on Wednesday, July 27, at 7:00 p.m.
Chad Allen will emcee the event, which will feature Spanish tapas, cocktails, live Flamenco music and dancing.
The Trevor Project is a non-profit endeavor established to promote acceptance of gay and questioning youth and aid in suicide prevention among that group. The organization runs The Trevor Helpline (866-4-U-TREVOR) is the only national toll-free 24-hour, 365 day-a-year confidential suicide hotline for gay and questioning youth. The organization provides information on identifying suicidal signs, how to assist someone with suicidal tendencies, and also features a confidential Q&A resource where youth can ask questions about issues surrounding sexual orientation and identity.

Women’s Pride Brunch
The fifth annual Women’s Pride Brunch takes place on Saturday, July 30, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at California Cuisine, located at 1027 University Ave. in Hillcrest. The featured speaker is Utah State Representative Jackie Biskupski.
Biskupski first ran for office in 1997 but lost her bid for a seat on the Salt Lake City Council by less than 50 votes. In 1998 Biskupski ran as an openly gay candidate for the Utah House of Representatives. Although the opposition attacked her based on her sexual orientation, she won the election with 62 percent of the vote, becoming the first openly gay representative elected in Utah.
In 2000 she was elected by her Democratic peers to serve in Democratic Leadership as caucus manager, and she served in that position for two years.
Biskupski is serving her fourth term. She currently serves on the Economic Development and Human Resources Appropriations Subcommittee; House Business and Labor Standing Committee; House Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Standing Committee; Rules Committee; and the Privately Owned Health Care Task Force.
Since she has been elected to office, Biskupski has been honored with seven awards, from the YWCA of Salt Lake City, the National Organization for Women, Utah Issues, the state of Utah, JEDI for Women, Equality Utah and the Salt Lake County Democratic Party.
In her spare time she has served on several boards and is serving her fifth year on the board of directors for the National Conference for Community and Justice. She also serves as a guest speaker in classrooms, from the elementary level through the university level. Last year much of her time was dedicated to helping the Don’t Amend Alliance work against Amendment 3.
Special guests at the Women’s Pride Brunch include 39th District state Senator Christine Kehoe, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and San Diego District 3 City Councilmember Toni Atkins.
