Summer in the Park: The University Heights Community Development Corporation’s annual summer concert series plays every Friday at Trolley Barn Park from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. through August. Bring a picnic and enjoy musical performances ranging from blues and swing to rock, country and reggae. Beer and sake: Experience Japanese, Mexican and American beverages, foods and cultural activities and help raise awareness of the Japan Society and the Maritime Museum of San Diego within the San Diego/Tijuana region at the Japan Society’s annual “Beer and Sake Festival.” Participants will have the opportunity to taste a variety of beers, sake and foods from the three nations. Street Scene: The all-ages event features alternative rock from over 40 bands this weekend. Friday, check out The Killers, The White Stripes, Social Distortion, Black Eyed Peas, Garbage, Louie XIV and more. Saturday includes The Pixies, Snoop Dog, The Flaming Lips, 311, Dashboard Confessional, The Used, Method Man, Unwritten Law and Death Cab for Cutie. San Diego Women’s Artist Exhibition: The exhibit features works by 13 women artists, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the San Diego Domestic Violence Council. At least one woman in the U.S. is beaten by her intimate partner every 15 seconds. Fifty percent of men who beat their partners also batter their children. Every year law enforcement agencies in San Diego County respond to over 20,000 calls of domestic violence. The art exhibition takes place at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village July 16-30 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (858) 354-5538.

The B-52’s: The ’80s and ’90s funky pop group plays Humphrey’s by the Bay at 7:30 p.m. Their 1989 hit album, Cosmic Thing, soared to the top of the Billboard chart with songs like “Love Shack,” “Roam” and “Deadbeat Club.” By the early ’90s the group had earned their reputation as the greatest party band on the planet. Musical: Local production company P33, Inc. debuts So Here’s the Thing…, a smart new musical that explores the lives of 11 different people with one universal problem. The production plays at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza and features a talented array of actors in an entertaining and heartfelt story. Rainbow Cyclists: Get rid of those midweek cobwebs by getting out on the trail for a while. The bike ride course will vary, but may include Penasquitos, San Clemente Canyon and Mission Trails. The Sky Tonight: On the first Wednesday of every month, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center planetarium presents “The Sky Tonight” at 7:00 p.m. The show is geared towards backyard astronomers, children and anyone who wants to impress their date while stargazing. There will be free telescope viewing after the show, hosted by the San Diego Astronomy Association, weather permitting. Tickets are $6.75 for adults and $5.50 for children. (619) 238-1233.
Marc Cohn, Suzanne Vega and Jesse Winchester: Marc Cohn won the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 1991 on the strength of his hit single “Walking In Memphis.” Suzanne Vega’s hit “Tom’s Diner” has been remixed over 30 times by everyone from Tupac to Ludacris, while her song “Caramel” was featured in the recent film Closer. Jesse Winchester released his debut album in 1970 to overwhelming critical acclaim and moved to Canada in protest of the Vietnam War. Humphrey’s by the Bay is located at 2241 Shelter Island Drive. The Heart of Hillcrest: There’s always something new going on in the heart of Hillcrest. Be a part of the action the first Thursday of every month with a community walkabout. Shops and restaurants will have music, munchies, beverages and fun from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. – all for free. Call any participating location in town to check out what they’ll be offering this month.
Spoken-word for the ladies: It’s time again for Siren, an open mic for women held at Korova Coffee Bar from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. Sign-ups begin at 7:30 p.m. The free event is dedicated to inspiring women via the expression of the creative arts, highlighting spoken word, hip-hop, comedy, music and activism. Sisters in Crime: Dr. Chris Holmes presents “Food: A Basic Need; A Basic Weapon” at 7:00 p.m. at the Joyce Beers Community Center, located in the Uptown Shopping Mall in Hillcrest.
