Opening art reception: The Athenaeum’s Juried Exhibition is a much-anticipated yearly event, showcasing artists working in 2-D or 3-D media, who live, work or exhibit in San Diego County. Derrick Cartwright, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art, and Roberto Tejada, on the staff at UCSD, served as the jurors. The opening of the juried exhibition runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, located at 1008 Wall Street in La Jolla. Admission is free. Amelia Browning: Local jazz singer Amelia Browning takes the stage at Lestat’s Coffee House at 9:00 p.m. Browning’s classical vocal training contribute to her unique sound. Lestat’s is located at 3343 Adams Ave in Normal Heights. Tickets are $10. (619) 282-0437.

Midnight Madness: As part of its Midnight Madness film series, Ken Cinema presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry as the kinky yet endearing “transsexual from Transylvania” Dr. Frank N. Furter, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as his hapless guests Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding rough trade and author Richard O’Brien as the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff. Woofstock 2005: A festival for dogs and people, bring your well-behaved dog and family to enjoy contests and games, an agility course, fly ball, face-painting and groovy dog products. Woofstock benefits the Southwest Campus of Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs to individuals with disabilities. Donations will be accepted. Woofstock takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at MiraCosta College campus in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Registration begins at 8:30 am. (760) 901-4300.

Gospel Brunch at LIPS: It doesn’t get much better than breakfast with the queens at Sunday Gospel Brunch at LIPS, located at 2770 Fifth Ave. Brunch is served and shows take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All-you-can-eat brunch and all-you-can-drink mimosas and Bloody Marys costs a mere $14.50, with a $3 cover charge. Sunday Concerts by the Sea: Moonlight Beach in Encinitas is one of the most scenic beaches in San Diego County. Take a trip up to North County on a Sunday afternoon during August to see a free concert. This week’s concert features Psydecar, a well-known act in the San Diego jam/reggae scene. Syncopated horns, grainy maracas and slow-picked electric guitars provide a funky, jazzy rock blend. The concert is free and starts at 3:00 p.m. (760) 633-2740.

The Paul Lynde Show: In this special three-night presentation to benefit Ordinary Miracles, The Paul Lynde Show takes the stage at Diversionary Theatre Aug. 8-10 at 7:00 p.m. Michael Airington stars as the legendary actor, who was one the most famous comic actors in television. Paul Lynde was “Bewitched” Uncle Arthur, the original center square on “Hollywood Squares” and Bye Bye Birdie’s hysterical dad. Aqualung: Matt Hales was a scholarship student of classical music who wrote his first symphony at 17 and has a voice eerily similar to Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Hales’ band Aqualung is an electro-pop favorite of Generation “O.C.” The band has appeared on the television shows of Carson Daly and David Letterman, and has opened for Jason Mraz. Local singer/songwriter Gregory Page opens Hales’ show. Tickets are $8; show starts at 8:00 p.m. at the House of Blues, located at 1055 Fifth Ave. (619) 299-2583.

Moonlight and Magnolias: This world-premiere comedy takes audiences into the inner sanctum of 1939 Hollywood, where David O. Selznick has just shut down production on Gone With the Wind to rewrite the script. This funny behind-the-scenes piece comes to life as three icons of the film industry battle over one of the greatest movies ever made. Show plays at Cassius Carter Centre Stage at the Old Globe Theatre. Tickets are $19. (619) 23-GLOBE.
Free self-defense class: Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Center, local martial artist Tony Ma, an Olympic-level Wu Shu athlete, presents a free self-defense class. A release of liability form is required. Dress in comfortable, loose clothing so that you can move. Topics include correct posture and breathing, body mechanics, punch and block, and other basic techniques designed to protect you from attack. John Hiatt and Shawn Colvin: Singer/songwriter John Hiatt makes his fifth appearance at Humphrey’s by the Bay in a solo acoustic performance. He’ll perform hits like “Have a Little Faith In Me” and “Tennessee Plates.” Fellow singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin, best known for her 1997 Grammy awards for “Sunny Came Home,” will also perform. Colvin released her greatest hits album, Polaroids, last year. Humphrey’s by the Bay is located at 2241 Shelter Island Dr. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $45.
