Point Loma Summer Concerts: Big Time Operator presents their big-band style. Point Loma Park is the venue for the Point Loma Summer Concerts happening each Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. through Aug. 19. The park is located at 1049 Catalina Blvd. The event is free. (858) 459-4033.
Summer in the Park concerts: The University Heights Community Development Corporation continues their summer concert series with the acoustic roots band 7th Day Buskers. Encanto Cultural Arts Festival: The 13th annual celebration kicks off with five outdoor stages showcasing jazz, blues, R&B, gospel and multicultural entertainment. The event takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and encompasses more than six city blocks on Imperial Avenue from 62nd to 68th streets. In addition, the festival will feature an interactive children’s “Fun Zone” complete with clowns, face-painters and rides. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 10 years old and younger. Pacific Beach Art Guild Exhibition: Attend a special reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village for the Pacific Beach Art Guild’s invitational exhibition “Relationships,” featuring the art of Michelle Abrams, Alesandra Colfi, Linda Erickson, Jane Fletcher, Annie Lemoux, Shirley Maier, Valli McDougle, Jeff Oakley, Dot Renshaw, Jim Respess, Priscilla Rogers and Renata Spiazzi. Hillcrest CityFest: In its 22nd year, this free event takes place along Fifth Avenue from University Avenue to Upas Street from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be live entertainment on three stages, over 300 vendors, two food courts and a beer garden. Entertainers include the Bayou Brothers, Ruby & The Red Hots, Laura Willcock, Kahuna Cowboys, The Corvettes and Candye Kane. The event is sponsored by the Hillcrest Association. (619) 858-0322.
Mango Bay Band: Enjoy an afternoon of surf tunes, blues, rock classics, reggae and Jimmy Buffet-style music while taking in panoramic views. Shuttle service is available from the San Miguel Fire Station at the corner of Mt. Helix Drive and Vivera. The free event takes place in Mt. Cowboy Junkies: The Canadian ensemble’s emotionally textured music wrapped around the levitating vocals of Margo Timmins makes their sixth appearance at Humphrey’s by the Bay. Whether they’re covering The Velvet Underground or Hank Williams or dishing out classic originals like “Misguided Angels,” Cowboy Junkies provide their audience with a uniquely mesmerizing experience. Comedy night: Tuesday is comedy night in the spacious, chic/Goth comfort zone of Lestat’s Coffee House in North Park. The Invention of Love: English poet A.E. Housman confronts his younger self, and the memories of a love unrequited in a world where art, literature and morality are being challenged by a young Irish student called Oscar Wilde. See a preview of The Invention of Love at Cygnet Theatre at 8:00 p.m. The play officially opens on Aug. 20 and will run through Sept. 25.
