Festival of Sail: Every three years, a small armada of tall ships from around the world drops anchor in the San Diego harbor. The festival continues through the weekend from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day. Check out vessels such as Russia’s Pallada, the R. Tucker Thompson of New Zealand and the America’s Cup-winning yacht Stars & Stripes cruise into the Embarcadero. Tickets are $12; $10 for children 12 and under. (619) 234-9153 ext. 193.
Amore en la Frontera: “Border Love” is a multi-media entertainment spectacle about the San Diego/Tijuana border region. Over 20 artists from both sides of the border have come together to explore the aspects of love – both gay and straight – unique to the region through music, dance, photography, video and performance art. The event takes place at Multiforo ICBC in Tijuana, México, Av. Centenario No 10151 Zona Río (right next to the Palacio Municipal, or City Hall). Carnival art: Emonium presents a carnival-themed art show featuring 35-50 artists at Aubergine in the Gaslamp District from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be a band and a DJ performing during segments of the show. Aubergine is located at 500 Fourth St. (504) 390-3271.
RadioActive benefit: A leading local independent media and activist organization, RadioActive, is holding their second anniversary live benefit show at the Kava Lounge from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The event will feature local favorites That Mad Ahab, Ex-Maquina, The Glossines, Barrel House and DJ Vic of Lou’s Records. Fresh vegetarian sushi will be served downstairs, and Kava will host drink specials from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Raffle prizes with gifts from local restaurants will be awarded. Ragtime Tea Dance: Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra presents Ragtime Tea Dance at the Champion Ballroom on Sunday, Aug. 21, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. The orchestra is an 11-piece group that includes seven members of the Hillcrest Wind Ensemble, a program at The Center. John Winkelman conducts the group. Admission is $10-$12. Ragtime dance lessons are offered from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m., followed by two dance sets played by the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra. Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds: Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright take center stage at Copley Symphony Hall at 7:00 p.m., each with full bands. Folds came onto the scene in the late ’90s as part of the band Ben Folds Five, penning the ballad hit “Brick” from Whatever and Ever Amen. Folds just released his second album as a solo artist, Songs for Silverman, featuring the song “Landed.” Wainwright’s latest album, Want Two, incorporates mini-opera into pop music. Cassandra Wilson: Acclaimed jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson takes the stage at Humphrey’s by the Bay. Her re-workings of songs by other artists like Van Morrison and Willie Nelson are highlighted in her latest album Glamoured, where she transforms Nelson’s “Crazy” and Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” into delicate and sultry jazz tunes. Breast cancer outreach event: Sharsheret, a national non-profit organization linking Jewish women facing breast cancer, is hosting an evening of inspiration and awareness for women. The event will feature Rochelle Shoretz, Founder, Sharsheret and former Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Shoretz will introduce Sharsheret, discuss the effects of breast cancer in the community, and review proper self-examination techniques. 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. held at a private home in La Jolla. Rainbow Cyclists: Get rid of the midweek cobwebs by getting out on the trail for a while with the Rainbow Cyclists. The bike ride course will vary, but may include Penasquitos, San Clemente Canyon and Mission Trails. The distance will take a couple of hours. Charity golf tournament: The 15th annual Sycuan Golf Tournament kicks off at the Sycuan Resort and Casino golf courses, and proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, an organization that supports injured marines, sailors and their families. San Diego Wine Opener: The third annual San Diego Wine Opener takes place from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Firehouse Museum in Little Italy. This is a casual and fun evening for all experience levels to sip great wines, savor great cuisine and enjoy desserts along with entertainment and an auction. Tickets are $50 for general admission and $70 with dessert and coffee included. Funds raised will benefit the San Diego and Imperial County chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Comedy of Errors: Director Darko Tresnjak sets Shakespeare’s classic play on a 1930s-era Turkish island, and incorporates puppetry and dance into the tale, which traces the misadventures of two sets of twins separated at birth and a father’s quest to find his sons amid a jumble of mistaken identities and fruitless wanderings.
