Coldplay: The dynamic British rock quartet performs at the Coors Amphitheatre. Known for their 2000 breakout debut album, Parachutes, the group continues to dominate airwaves with melodic hits like “Clocks,” from their multi-platinum 2002 hit A Rush of Blood to the Head, and “Speed of Sound,” from their latest album, XY. Hawk Street Classic and Exotic Car Show: Car club members, collectors and enthusiasts can check out classic and exotic cars during this first annual festival, which takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 1000 W. Washington Street in Mission Hills. (619) 299-8020.
Hillcrest Wind Ensemble: The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble celebrates its 20th year with an “emerald” anniversary concert. Selections will include a variety of band music, including Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E Flat”; “Hounds of Spring,” by Alfred Reed; Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Song Suite”; and “Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban,” by John Williams. San Marcos Grand Summer Festival: This yearly event features a specialty food garden, showcasing the finest restaurants of San Marcos, and an invitational Microbrewery Garden surrounded by blues and jazz stages. It also boasts over 300 vendors featuring arts and crafts, antiques, clothing and more, and one of the largest classic car shows in San Diego County. The festival takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Via Vera Cruz, located between Grand Avenue and San Marcos Boulevard. (760) 744-1270.
Flesh and Blood: Adams Avenue Studio of the Arts and Electra Theater Productions present Flesh and Blood, a true story of a homeless woman’s desperate search for the daughter she was forced to relinquish. The woman takes a free-fall jump into the dream-world of Judith Klaus. Along Judith’s journey, meet characters from her “story” that are manifestations of her wild and uncensored imagination. The play runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 7:00 p.m. through Sept. 4. Tickets are $15, or $12 for students and seniors. Catalina Island trip for pilots: San Diego’ gay airplane pilots’ group, Unusual Attitudes, will join others from Southern California for a day trip to Catalina Island. Members will fly out of Montgomery Field, Carlsbad and El Cajon to venture over to Catalina for the day on the shores of Avalon Harbor for lunch and site seeing. Art course: “The Artists Way” is a course offered to painters, sculptors, watercolorists, digital artists and all other visual artists. Based on a book by Julia Cameron, this 12-week creativity course offers the playful and practical tools artists need for deeper creativity. An introduction workshop takes place from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the San Diego Art Institute, located in the House of Charm within Balboa Park. The fee for the introduction workshop is $25. Concert in the Park: The Spreckels Organ Society sponsors free organ concerts every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. throughout the summer. Call any participating location in town to check out what they’ll be offering this month.
Spoken-word for the ladies: It’s time again for Siren, an open mic for women held at Korova Coffee Bar from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. This month features local songstress Joanie Mendenhall. Her debut album, Secretary Waltz, is a San Diego Music Award finalist for “Best Local Recording” and has earned raves in San Diego media, drawing comparisons to Aimee Mann and Elliott Smith. Big Fish on the lawn: A free screening of Tim Burton’s 2003 hit about a wonderful storyteller named Edward Bloom who recounts tall tales of his wild and worldly adventures to his skeptical son plays behind the Casa del Prado courtyard at 8:00 p.m., with seating on the lawn in front of the Botanical Building.
