The Lambda Letters Project and the Malcolm X Library invite community activists, educators, parents and political leaders to the first San Diego area screening Transgeneration, an eight-part Sundance Channel documentary that follows four transgender college students on different campuses across the country.

With testimony from their friends, classmates and families, the film illustrates the growing movement toward new definitions of sexuality and gender identities.

Transgeneration will be screened at the Malcolm X Library on Friday, Sept. 9, at 4:00 p.m. The Malcolm X Library is located at 5148 Market St. in San Diego. Seating is first come, first served.

A post-screening discussion will be facilitated by City Commissioner Julia Legaspi and STAR Project Coordinator Tracie Jada O’Brien. Project STAR stands for Supporting Transgender Access to Resources, and is a program of Family Health Centers of San Diego.

Openly gay Democratic National Committee Treasurer Andrew Tobias will be in San Diego to address the 2005 Freedom Banquet on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Holiday Inn on the bay to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the San Diego Democratic Club (SDDC).

Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins is serving as honorary chair of the event.

“Who would have predicted in 1975 that in 2005, the current mayor of San Diego would be an openly gay lesbian and the mayor of Chula Vista would be an openly gay man?” said Stephen Whitburn, SDDC president. “Yet, for every rung we climb on the ladder of progress, it seems like we slip down two notches in other areas….”

Tobias has appeared on such shows as “Today,” “Good Morning America,” “Face the Nation” and the “MacNeil-Lehrer Report.” His books include three New York Times best-sellers, and he created the financial software Managing Your Money. Tobias also worked at New York Magazine, where he covered the world of finance, and later at Esquire. He has had columns in Time and Parade magazines.

Charter members George Murphy and Bob Lynn, founding president, among other special guests, will also be present at the banquet. Tables at the Founder’s Circle are $1,250 for 10, and tables of Friends are $750. Tickets to the Founder’s Circle are $125, with priority seating and special recognition at the reception. Tickets are $90.

“In honor of our 30th year, it would be wonderful to have as many board members and friends from the past 30 years to join us to celebrate our anniversary, highlighting the many milestones that have been accomplished over that time,” said Andreas Villa, SDDC executive vice president.

The Freedom Banquet is SDDC’s largest fund-raising event. With the upcoming elections for mayor, City Council and propositions, the need for money to support GLBT-friendly candidates and issues is strong.

Early-bird registration is now available for this year’s fifth annual golf classic presented by the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA). The 18-hole tournament, which begins at 12:00 noon on Oct. 20 at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley, will be held in memory of former GSDBA board member John R. McCusker. Half of all proceeds will be given to the education fund established in his name.

The deadline for early registration is Sept. 20. The cost is $125 per golfer before the deadline or $150 thereafter. Price includes green fees, a shared cart, box lunch and an awards dinner at sunset.

Momentum on the Midway, a military-themed dance party benefiting Servicemembers Legal Defense Network’s efforts to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual personnel, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 6:30 p.m. on the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier.

More than 1,000 SLDN supporters are expected to dance the night away with DJ David Knapp, named “one of America’s six top and most influential DJs” by GQ Magazine. The Momentum VIP reception also includes keynote speaker and former Air Force staff sergeant David Hall. Hall is one of 12 plaintiffs in Cook v. Rumsfeld, SLDN’s constitutional challenge to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Since 1993, the Pentagon has fired 10,000 men and women under the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban. SLDN is the only national legal aid and advocacy group working to repeal the ban. They have answered more than 7,000 requests for assistance, supported introduction of the first Congressional bill to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and filed a federal court challenge to the military’s ban. SLDN’s legal team has stopped witch hunts, investigated anti-gay harassment and supported men and women who want to save their military careers.

The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego kicks off its 14th season of song with an information night on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will take place at the chorus’ regular rehearsal space at the University Christian Church, located at 3900 Cleveland Ave., across the street from the Hillcrest post office.

Those who attend will have the opportunity to find out about the Gay Men’s Chorus, meet current members, and hear a few samples of the chorus’ music.

“We have an exciting 2005-2006 season planned, and welcome even more people to join us,” said GMCSD president Robert Millar. “The chorus is excited about the return of founding artistic director Gary Holt, who brings with him numerous opportunities for singers as well as non-singing members to participate. We are particularly interested in increasing our operations staff, and are looking for those folks who can spend about three hours each Wednesday evening to volunteer with the chorus.”

The Gay Men’s Chorus San Diego’s upcoming season will include a holiday concert in December, a French-themed show in April, the annual Pride concert in July, and a tribute to big band music in August.

The American Cancer Society is recruiting volunteer team captains for the eighth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, which takes place Sunday, Oct. 23, in Balboa Park.

Team captains are asked to develop teams of at least 10 walkers who are encouraged to raise $100 each in pledges. Team captains will be honored at a rally and kick-off breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Nearly 2,000 San Diego County women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 400 will die of the disease, according to American Cancer Society statistics. The annual walk raises funds for research, legislation and patient services.
