Sonic Youth: After forming in 1981, the group became one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the ’80s and continued to redefine indie music into the ’90s and today. Razzmatazz: Jamie Roxx’s end of summer bash kicks off at El Gato Loco at 9:00 p.m., featuring live DJs spinning the best of electroclash, glitz, progressive house, EBM and dark wave. There will also be a live performance by the San Diego Kings Club, a full bar and hookah lounge, a free raffle and a $500 cash balloon drop. All proceeds benefit Mama’s Kitchen. Admission is $5. The Nerd: The Coronado Playhouse presents Larry Shue’s comedy about an architect who attempts to deal with his social misfit, sanity-destroying houseguest. Show plays at 8:00 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. Admission is $20, and $17 for a Sunday show. (619) 435-4856.
Cat Power: Chan Marshall first hit New York clubs playing the piano as part of her indie-singer/songwriter fare. She soon landed spots opening for similarly minded acts like Liz Phair. Marshall, who operates under the alias Cat Power, plays a delicate, eclectic mix of folk, piano pop and indie rock. Her latest album, You are Free, was released in 2003. Kelda at Lestat’s: Check out up-and-coming singer/songwriter Kelda at Lestat’s Coffee House. She started playing piano at age 5 and has blossomed into a dynamic musician who lists Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos as some of her influences. Show is at 9:00 p.m. and tickets are $5. Curve: Nationally and internationally known DJ Kimberly S. and Lesley Beverly will be turning up the heat for the girls in San Diego with their all-new, once a month party for lesbians at The Flame. This exclusive girls night out will feature fierce female DJs on two separate dance floors, hot go-go dancers, VIP tables and service, special live performances and drink specials. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: Ryu, a young deaf mute, is unable to donate a kidney to his dying sister due to incompatible blood types. On top of this, he is fired for missing work to care for her. Succumbing to the underground organ market, he agrees to sell one of his own kidneys in exchange for cash. But when he wakes up with both his kidney and cash gone, Ryu and his terrorist girlfriend kidnap the daughter of a wealthy businessman to raise ransom money. The Clayton Brothers Quintet: The charismatic bassist John Clayton and his brother, alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton, travel down from Los Angeles to make a rare San Diego appearance with their quintet at 5:30 p.m. Featuring trumpeter Terrell Stafford and young pianist Gerald Clayton, this in-demand group tours the world performing their unique style of classic, swinging jazz.
