GSDBA directory cover to be chosen at Art Institute mixer
Members of the Greater San Diego Business Association will vote on a cover design for its 2006 directory at a mixer scheduled from on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the San Diego Art Institute.
The entries, submitted by local graphic artists, will be prominently displayed at the event as GSDBA members vote on their favorite selections. The winning artist will receive $700 and be announced that evening.
“The ambience of the Art Institute provides a fitting backdrop to the artistic cover submissions,” said Joyce Marieb, executive director of the GSDBA. “We’re expecting more entries than ever before.”
Distribution of the new directories will take place in January with a print run of 30,000 copies. “We’re using coated matte paper to give the 2006 directories a slimmer and more contemporary look,” Marieb added.
The mixer is sponsored by Timothy Fields of the Art Institute, Donna Cunning of Allsure Insurance, Eric Brown of Waddell & Reed and “The Caterer, Bill Bond,” who will provide the food.
Admission to the mixer is $5 for members and $7 for guests, which includes the first drink free. The San Diego Art Institute is located at 1439 El Prado in Balboa Park. For more information, call the GSDBA office at (619) 296-4543.
MTV’s ‘Real World’ looks for new stars in San Diego
On Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., casting directors from Bunim/Murray Productions, producers of the hit MTV show “The Real World,” will be holding an open casting call at Pacific Beach Bar and Grill. All applicants between the ages of 18-24 are asked to bring a recent picture of themselves – which will not be returned – and a photo ID.
Seven people will get the opportunity to be on the show’s 18th season. “The Real World, MTV’s longest running show, is a documentary series about seven strangers who spend five months living and working together.
“We look for characters from real life; people with strong personalities who are unafraid to speak their minds,” said Jonathan Murray, an executive producer of “The Real World.” Past seasons have been populated with cast members from all walks of life, who have shared their daily experiences openly with millions of viewers. Fans of the shows will remember alumni such as the irreverent Teck; Pedro, the HIV/AIDS educator; and Melissa, the firecracker from the “The Real World: New Orleans” cast.
The challenge will be met as the Bunim/Murray casting department screens tens of thousands of applicants during open casting calls across the U.S.
Pacific Beach Bar and Grill is located at 860 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach. For more information, call (858) 272-4745.
Local congregation sponsors resolution
The University Christian Church in Hillcrest was one of four congregations co-sponsoring a resolution that was overwhelmingly approved by the delegates of the denominations’ General Assembly held in Portland, Ore., July 23-27. The resolution denounces hateful speech and action aimed at GLBT persons and seeks to renew the denomination’s commitment to a discernment process regarding the full acceptance of the GLBT community within the life of the church. The resolution is co-sponsored by North Side Christian Church in Omaha, Neb.; Park Avenue Christian Church in New York City; National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.; and the local congregation.
The denomination, known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), consists of 771,000 members in 3,700 congregations in the United States and Canada. It is a partner denomination with the United Church of Christ. The General Assembly meets every two years.
The University Christian Church is an “open and affirming” congregation located at 3900 Cleveland Ave., across from the Hillcrest post office.
