Sapphic Cinema: The Women’s Resource Center at The Center hosts a film series of works by, for and about lesbian, bisexual, transgender and feminist women on the fourth Friday of every month at 7:00 p.m. This month’s film is The Killing of Sister George. Cabaret: Angelo D’Agostino and G. Scott Lacy are back with an autumnal blend of spellbinding song styling in “Superstitions.” Cabaret meets fireside storytelling in this new selection of music about the magic and mystery of unrequited love. Six Degrees Halloween party: The theme this year is “Sexy vs. Sick.” The costume contest will begin around 12:00 midnight, with $400 dollars in cash and prizes for the winners. Prizes will be awarded for the sexiest costume, the sickest costume and combinations thereof. DJ Moody spins. The event starts at 10:00 p.m., and there is a $5 cover. Indian dance performance: Internationally renowned choreographer and dancer Malavika Sarukkai will premier a newly commissioned work at the San Diego Museum of Art. “Painting in Space” is the artist’s response to works of art on view in the museum’s concurrent exhibition, “Domains of Wonder.” Accompanied by an orchestra from India, Sarukkai uses her body as the medium to paint the space around her. The performance takes place in the James S. Copley Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $40, $30 for members and $20 for students with ID. Nightmare on Normal Street: Kick off your Halloween celebration in style at The Center’s annual event, taking place from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue in Hillcrest. Outrageous host Nicole emcees the costume contest, which will deliver $1,000 in cash prizes to the winners. The competition starts at 9:00 p.m., and admission is $5. Oktoberfest: The fourth annual San Diego Oktoberfest takes place at its new location at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event will feature more than 40 bands on six stages, traditional German food, carnival rides, an outdoor beer garden, and tents with 20 breweries, oom-pah bands and more. San Diego Oktoberfest takes place Friday, Oct. 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, Saturday, Oct. 29, from 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight and Sunday, Oct. 30, from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 (13 and over), $5 (kids 6-12) and free for kids 5 and under. Fall back: It’s that time of year again. Make sure you turn you clocks back an hour to let the Daylight Savings begin. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep. It will give an extra hour of daylight in the morning.

The Sky Tonight: On the first Wednesday of every month, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center planetarium presents “The Sky Tonight” at 7:00 p.m. The show is geared toward backyard astronomers, children and anyone who wants to impress their date while stargazing. There will be free telescope viewing after the show, hosted by the San Diego Astronomy Association, weather permitting. Tickets are $6.75 for adults and $5.50 for children. (619) 238-1233.

Jazz in the Park: One of New York’s finest jazz pianists, Mulgrew Miller is also one of the most recorded pianists on the scene today. He has performed with the Duke Ellington big band, Betty Carter and Woody Shaw, to name a few. Miller brings his powerful, lyrical and imaginative compositions to the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park, in a rare Southern California appearance at the James S. Copley Auditorium. The Heart of Hillcrest: There’s always something new going on in the heart of Hillcrest. Be a part of the action the first Thursday of every month with a community walkabout. Shops and restaurants will have music, munchies, beverages and fun from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. – all for free. What more could you ask for in a neighborhood? Call any participating location in town to check out what they’ll be offering this month.
Sisters in Crime: Duane D. Wilson, a former law enforcement officer in Oregon and California, will discuss profiling at the mystery readers and writers’ group beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Joyce Beers Community Center on Vermont Street in Hillcrest.
