Scorpions fall to the Diamonds 48-19 in American Conference championship
Published Thursday, 10-Nov-2005 in issue 933
Despite going up against last season’s Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL) champions, the So Cal Scorpions went into the American Conference championship confident.
The rested and well-seasoned Dallas Diamonds were just too much for the Scorpions to handle, as the Diamonds ended the Scorpions’ turn-around season 48-19 on Nov. 5 in the American Conference championship.
“They were rested, and it showed. They looked like it was their first game of the season,” Scorpions team owner Ann Bagala said.
On the opening drive the Scorpions defense made the Diamonds offense work for nine minutes to score the first Diamond touchdown. Then the Diamonds kicked off with an on-sides kick and recovered the ball. It wasn’t long before Dallas’ one-woman show Jessica Springer was in the end zone again, and Dallas was up 14-0. The Scorpions answered back with a touchdown in the second quarter and the score was 21-7, but then came the injuries.
In the end, injuries to several key Scorpion players with no backups etched the outcome.
“I am very proud of what this team accomplished this season,” Bagala said. “In one year we completely turned the organization around from 1-9 to 9-1, a playoff win and winning the Western Division Championship. No one expected us to be above .500, let alone in the conference championship,” Bagala added.
The Scorpions ended the regular season with a 10-2 record and other leading stats. They also brought the first ever women’s professional football playoff game to San Diego this season.
