Kettner Nights: This progressive evening features art and design exhibitions from a variety of showrooms. The Kettner Art and Design District is a grouping of retail shops, service establishments and art galleries dedicated to bringing the latest in design, home furnishings, accessories, fashion, jewelry and art to San Diego. The event runs from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on selected Friday evenings through November. (619) 546-5121.
Women’s art night: Join the Women’s Resource Center for en evening of art and performance. Mix with other artists through creative activities and enjoy a belly dance show by Atash Maya. There will also be spoken word performed by the winners of the recent OUTspoken women’s poetry competition. Food and wine are free. Red Hot Holidays party: Join hundreds of San Diego women as The Center kicks off the holiday season. Alicia Champion and Danielle Lo Presti are the hosts and featured performers. Music will be provided by DJ Sandra Ware. Tickets are $5 per person and the event will take place at The Center from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All event attendees will receive a pass to the official after-party that takes place at The Flame, located at 3780 Park Blvd. Holiday attire is encouraged. Art opening: The Adams Ave Studio of the Arts presents Gunther Allen’s “Spirit and Flesh,” a beautiful collection of photos on canvas and prints of gorgeous males in dramatic poses with nature. Buried in sand, tangled in branches and squished into mountain crevasses, these men seem to become the work of art. The opening takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the show runs until the end of the month. Adams Ave Studio of the Arts is located at 2804 Adams Ave. (619) 584-3593.
San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival: Taste wine from over 100 wineries and mouthwatering cuisine from San Diego’s finest restaurants and gourmet food companies, and see culinary exhibits. The Grand Event takes place on Nov. 12 at the Embarcadero Park North from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $85. Cooking and wine tasting classes are also being held Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11, as well as a reserve tasting on Nov. 11 on the rooftop terrace at the Westgate Hotel. A Bright Room Called Day: Angels in America scribe Tony Kushner wrote this haunting story of a group of artists struggling to preserve themselves in 1930s Berlin as the Weimar Republic falls to its knees. The play is a genre-defying mixture of literate comedy, serious drama and political-philosophical meditation. The play runs until Dec. 4. Showtimes are 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sundays, Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $23-$27. Diversionary Theatre is located at 4545 Park Blvd. (619) 220-0097.

Documentary screening: The San Diego Public Library and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties will screen two documentary films that focus on the Patriot Act. Beyond the Patriot Act and Unconstitutional will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on the third floor auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E St. The event is free and open to the public. Book reading: Chuck Zito, former executive director of Diversionary Theatre, reads from his first novel, A Habit for Death, at 7:30 p.m. at Diversionary Theatre. In the novel, Sister Sally collapses onstage at St. Gilbert’s Summer Musical Theater during a rehearsal of Convent of Fear (a musical comedy about a serial killer stalking a convent). A Man of No Importance: SDSU’s Experimental Theatre presents the play based on the 1994 Albert Finney movie of the same name. Alfie Byrne is a bus driver living in 1960s Dublin who’s a passionate fan of Oscar Wilde. He’s determined to stage a version of Salome at his church, despite the objections of church authorities. In the process of fighting for the play, Alfie is finally forced to confront his sexuality. The Experimental Theatre is located on the campus of San Diego State University. Show runs Nov. 11-19 at 8:00 p.m. Matinees on Nov. 13 and Nov. 20 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12-$15. (619) 594-6884.
Liz Phair: The mother of alternative rock ’n’ rage takes the stage at the House of Blues. After her heyday in the mid-’90s, her angry feminist guitar riffs still take center stage a decade later. Phair’s on tour to promote her latest album, Somebody’s Miracle, released last month. Missy Higgins opens. Book singing: Fritz Klein, M.D., an expert in the field of bisexuality, will sign his first novel, Life, Sex, and the Pursuit of Happiness, at Obelisk Bookstore at 7:00 p.m. Klein is a respected psychiatrist and sex researcher who invented the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid, which helps define who bisexuals are and where they fit on the sexual orientation continuum.
