Published Thursday, 17-Nov-2005 in issue 934
The San Diego Tennis Federation (SDTF) 2005 club singles championships were held this past weekend at the Balboa Park Tennis Club at Morley Field where champions were crowned in several divisions.
Play consisted of round robin format in the early rounds followed by single elimination. In the Open Division finals, James Adams needed three sets to defeat Jerry Sabio 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Brad Hasper defeated Richard Brown 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the A Division. Vince Travaglione edged Jonathan Flood 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the other semifinal. Hasper only needed two sets to dispose of Travaglione in the finals with a 6-1, 7-5 win.
Both semifinal matches were won in straight sets in the B Division. After winning the first set in a tiebreaker, Greg Lindsey defeated Robert Tiangco 7-6 (2), 6-3. Nick Crossland also needed a tie-breaker in the first set during his 7-6 (5) 6-0 victory over Rowel Cannu. Crossland had an easier time in the finals, beating Lindsey in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
After dropping the first set, Brian Wood had an easier time against Andrew Rudolph in his 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 semifinal win in the C Division. Jordan Brewer relinquished just one game against Todd Linke with a lopsided 6-0, 6-1 semifinal victory. In the finals, Wood was in a similar situation as the semis when he lost a tight first set against Brewster, this time in a tiebreaker. He recovered, however, to come from behind and win two consecutive close sets to capture the C Division title over Brewster 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4.
Ricco Espinoza won all four of his matches to win the D Division title. David Koenig was the runner up, winning three out of four matches.
