Hi friends! Welcome to another installment from your local Sapphic columnist! This month’s topic is one that is very close to my heart…World AIDS Day. That’s right, folks – World AIDS Day is approaching fast and will take place on Dec. 1. Why am I choosing to write about it here, you ask? Well, let me give you a little background…
The truth is that when I am not writing sassy commentary on the latest girl-on-girl action on “America’s Next Top Model,” I actually do have a real job. For about a year and a half, I’ve been working at Fraternity House, Inc., a nonprofit that provides caring homes for people with HIV/AIDS in North County. Although I am on the administrative side and not the care-giving side, I still have a lot of interaction with the residents, as well as even more interaction with the greater HIV/AIDS community. Working at Fraternity House has taught me a lot about the state of AIDS locally, nationally and internationally. And here’s the main message I take away from my job daily – HIV/AIDS is still a pressing issue!!! Yes, it is true that new treatment options and medications have changed the face of AIDS considerably. But people are still dying from this disease. Families are still suffering. Prejudice against people with AIDS still exists. And as attention to the epidemic fades, so does funding. I attend a lot of HIV/AIDS-related meeting locally, and I see that money is dwindling. Programming, on the other hand, is not because there is still is a huge need for services. HIV/AIDS is still a critical issue for our community, and it is not going away any time soon.
That’s why I feel it’s fitting that the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is “Stop AIDS. Keep the promise.” The theme is meant to be a challenge to the nations of the world to make good on the fiscal promises they’ve made in terms of eradicating AIDS. But it also urges individuals like you and me to make good on our own personal promises and ask ourselves, “What am I doing to help in the fight against this disease?” If you are not already involved in the local HIV/AIDS community, I invite you to attend one of the many events taking place on Dec. 1 in honor of World AIDS Day. For your convenience, I’ve listed them below! Please join me in making the promise to make our world a better, safer and more peaceful home for all.
