San Diego Tennis Federation holds doubles championships
Top seeds upset in A and B division finals
Published Thursday, 24-Nov-2005 in issue 935
Over 25 doubles teams competed for a title at the 2005 San Diego Tennis Federation (SDTF) club doubles championships this past weekend at the Balboa Park Tennis Club. The doubles tournament was divided into five divisions: Open, A, B, C and D.
In Open Division play, due to the small draw of four teams, the winner was determined in round-robin format. Romeo Matias and Jerry Sabio were tied with James Adams and Daniel Lee with 2-1 records. As a result of the tie, Matias and Sabio captured the title because they had a better score ratio.
There were no upsets in the A Division semifinals, as the top-seeded tandem of Richard Brown and Leonard Trinh defeated Vince Travaglione and Alfonso Santana 6-3, 6-2. The second-seeded team, Frank January and George Byrd, also won in straight sets over Armin Afsahi and Jonathan Flood 6-4, 7-5. In the finals, however, January and Byrd needed just two sets to upset Brown and Trinh 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The top-seeded tandem of Cyrus Azares and Carlo Santilla defeated Robert Tiangco and Matt Williams 6-4, 6-1. Second-seeded Ding Dizon and Steve Farrow got past Sidney Shiroma and Steve Shultz 6-3, 7-5. The finals featured another upset as Dizon and Farrow beat Azares and Santilla 6-3, 7-5.
Unseeded Mike D’Elia and Mike Loftus got past second-seeded Jere Halligan and Dana Zeff 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the C Division semifinals. Dan Manes and Andrew Randolph received a default win in the other semi. In the finals, D’Elia and Loftus won the championship 6-4, 6-3 over Manes and Randolph.
The D Division was determined by a round robin. Brett Bell and Ed Sanchez only dropped one game, while posting a 2-0 record to win the championship. Todd Linke and Mark Hespeth were the runners-up with a 1-1 record.
