Conversations with Nicole

In my last column, I announced the official formation of the “Friends of Toni Atkins” committee to explore her possible run for District 4 county supervisor, and the wrong number was listed. The correct number is (619) 239-6534.
Lunch with District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis
I had lunch this past week with our hard-working, popular District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis (at Ortega’s Mexican Bistro). We discussed her leadership in the continuing round-up of violent gang members in the county, and the establishment of “non-gang zones.”
San Diego’s gang violence has continued to grow, but now this enforcement of non-gang zones is making a significant positive impact.
Bonnie and I also talked about her decision to go back to overseeing some “drug courts,” of which she was the first in the nation to establish.
Recent polling shows District Attorney Dumanis has high approval ratings, and she is expected to have no opposition when she seeks re-election. We talked about the recent elections and upcoming elections, of course, but that was “off the record.”
The last time I was in our state capital, some political leaders were talking about Bonnie Dumanis becoming a future state attorney general. When I asked her about this, she said she was totally focused on being the top law enforcement officer in the county.
David Rubin for judge

Congratulations, Baja Betty’s, on your first-year anniversary!
In the past few years, Deputy District Attorney David Rubin has prosecuted some very high-profile cases, and has done an outstanding job. Even under the glare of the media and under heavy public pressure, Rubin has been calm, cool and successful.
Now Rubin is being urged by many to run for judge next year (there are two open seats), and I agree it’s his time.
I’ve watched Rubin during many of his cases, and he is one of the most effective prosecutors in San Diego. He would make an excellent judge.
Though David Rubin’s personality has some “rough edges,” I believe he can smooth them out, and I hope our community will support his candidacy.
As many of you know, Rubin’s handsome partner of almost 15 years, attorney Todd Stevens, is a past president of the San Diego County Bar Association, and was at one time encouraged to run for public office himself.
I don’t have an executive assistant
Two businesses have recently contacted me to say that an individual has approached them as my “personal executive assistant,” even touring one business. Read my lips: I do not have and executive assistant.
As a city commissioner and chair of the Police Chief’s Advisory Board, I do not have a personal staff, though the city’s Human Relations Commission, where I serve as vice chair, has two female staff members.

Bartender Tug of Rich’s is ready to serve you…
So, businesses, be aware that a con-game may be going on, and do not let these individuals into your business or write them any charity checks. Better yet, call me immediately. Thank you.
‘Holiday Lights’ concerts Dec. 3-4
The award-winning Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego’s highly popular annual holiday concerts, with their fabulous artistic director, Gary Holt, are coming up Dec. 3-4.
This year’s concert is called “Holiday Lights,” and will take place at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theater in La Jolla. Tickets are only $15 to $25, and are available at Obelisk Bookstore, by phoning (619) 57-GMCSD, or online at www.gmcsd.com.
Dec. 8: Shawn Ingram salute!
Mark your calendar for Thursday, Dec. 8, when there will be a communitywide salute to Shawn Ingram, who is leaving The Center after being one of its best and most productive development directors ever!
The fun event will take place at The Flame from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and many people are expected to attend to thank the hard-working Ingram for nearly six years of outstanding service. For further information, phone (619) 692-2077 ext. 246.
S.O.S: children’s toy drive

Pick up your San Diego GLBT visitors guide at the GSDBA office… the guide is fabulous!
The Imperial Court de San Diego has held its annual “Toys for Kids” holiday drive since the early 1970s, and every year the need gets bigger, with more children’s agencies reaching out. We need your help – everyone’s help – this year. Hold your own “toy drive” at work, at your business, bar or organization (the good people of the GSDBA hold one every year).
Please help out this year, as your support is needed more than ever. For further information, phone (619) 993-1212, (619) 284-8983 or (619) 692-1967.
