The Center names new development director
Delores A. Jacobs, chief executive officer of The Center, announced that Jenn Jones will serve as the organization’s new director of development.
As development director, Jones will be responsible for the agency’s fund-raising efforts, including membership, monthly and major donor programs, corporate and foundation giving, and special events. Jones will replace Shawn Ingram, who announced in August that he will step down in December, after more than five years of service to The Center. Jones will join a senior management team that includes Center veterans Patrick Loose, John Stoner and AJ Davis.
“We are thrilled to have a person of Jenn’s professional caliber join The Center’s team,” said Richard Valdez, chair of The Center’s board of directors. “We believe her proven vision and commitment will certainly help The Center as we continue to build on the successful fund-raising foundation already in place.”
“With more than 10 years of local and national fund-raising experience, Jenn brings a high level of talent and skill to this critical position,” Jacobs said. “We are looking forward to the numerous contributions we believe she’ll make to The Center and our San Diego LGBT community.”
Prior to joining The Center, Jones served as an account supervisor with Bob Nelson Associates and was the director of development for the DC Appleseed Center for Law & Justice in Washington, D.C. She was the deputy director of development for the National Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, and worked in the membership department at the Human Rights Campaign. Jones also provided strategic direct-marketing consulting services to a variety of political and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C, including the Sierra Club, the Democratic National Committee and Planned Parenthood.
In addition, Jones served as adjunct faculty for the Gill Foundation based in Denver, Colorado. In this capacity, she facilitated more than 40 philanthropy workshops nationwide. These workshops were designed to strengthen the fund-raising capacity of GLBT grassroots organizations across the country
Jones graduated cum laude from Knox College with a degree in philosophy and English literature.

Hillcrest History Guild launches
Hillcrest, one of San Diego’s oldest communities, now has a virtual museum of the neighborhood that is accessible, at no cost, via the Internet. The impetus behind the Hillcrest History Guild, one of San Diego’s newest nonprofit organizations, began in 2002 with the first edition of HillQuest. The urban guide to the 92103 zip code is produced by local business partners Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors.
While researching the annual neighborhood almanac, it was difficult for the publishers to find photos and stories from Hillcrest’s rich history, they said. They founded the 501c3 nonprofit Hillcrest History Guild to preserve those hard-to-find photos and memorabilia.
“Imagine if our own historical society had begun with W. W. Whitson at the founding of Hillcrest in 1907,” said Garwood. “How wonderful to have that community resource, and with it the ability to share a photo of the group of women responsible for the original Hillcrest sign 43 years later. But we don’t.”
The duo has now set the foundation for the history guild and is procuring grant monies to record slices of history for future generations by sharing stories, photos, albums and pieces of memorabilia.
Garwood and Moors say maintaining and adding to the educational, interactive virtual online museum is at the top of the guild’s priorities. The guild also provides a place of safekeeping for artifacts.
San Diegans in possession of artifacts, documents, photos or images relating to Hillcrest past and present are encouraged to contact the guild.
The Hillcrest History Guild is accepting these donations or will scan them into the database and return the items to their owners. Video and oral histories are also in production. Contributors and participants will be acknowledged on the virtual museum site. Monetary donations are tax deductible.
Volunteer opportunities are also available. For more information, visit www.hillcresthistory.org or call (619) 260-1929.
Area HIV/AIDS service providers allocated $474,540
The San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative (SDHFC), a program of the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, will award $474,540 in grants for HIV/AIDS services in the San Diego region. The funds, raised through AIDS Walk San Diego (AWSD) and a number of local and national donors who contribute to SDHFC, will be distributed to 38 agencies that provide direct support and services to those affected by the disease. The money will be awarded at the annual AWSD/SDHFC Grants Awards Ceremony, which takes place at The Center on Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The 2006 recipients, selected through a granting process spearheaded by SDHFC, represent a wide-ranging group of 38 direct HIV/AIDS service organizations in the San Diego region. Some of the services that will be provided with these donated funds to the 5,400-plus individuals and families struggling to survive with AIDS and the estimated 15,000 people infected with HIV in San Diego County are: care, treatment, prevention and education services for migrant farm workers; case management and translation services to persons who are hard of hearing or deaf; medical services for HIV-positive individuals in San Diego County and the border communities; educational support groups for multi-ethnic English and monolingual Spanish-speaking clients; and harm-reduction services, including support groups for crystal methamphetamine users, street outreach and education.
For more information about the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, the grant awardees or to RSVP for the ceremony, call Katherine Crow, SDHFC coordinator, at (858) 614-4894, or e-mail kcrow@alliancehf.org.
