Unseeded San Diego Tennis Federation (SDTF) player David Enkelis won the A Division singles championship at the 12th annual Palm Springs Open on Nov. 27. The tournament was presented by the Desert Tennis Association at the Palm Springs Riviera Resort Hotel Nov. 25-27 in Palm Springs. Play was divided into the Open, A, B, C and D divisions.
Enkelis strung together four solid straight-set wins on his way to the semifinals. After an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over John Dito in the first round, Enkelis upset fourth-seed and fellow SDTF member Brad Hasper 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. In the third round, Enkelis posted a 6-0, 6-1 win to set up a meeting with 10th-seeded Jonathan Luu in the quarterfinals.
Enkelis upset Luu 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals, where he received a default victory over top-seeded Chris Willis, who did not show up for the match.
Enkelis endured his toughest match of the tournament in the finals, where he earned a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over third-seeded Ralph Nunley.
In Open Division play, San Diego’s Jim Winters advanced to the singles quarterfinals with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Greg Loyd. In the quarters, he had to pull out with an injury after Babil Najjar won the first set 7-5.
Also in the Open Division, San Diego’s third-seeded tandem of Scott Crabtree and Jeremy Marble advanced to the doubles semifinals by defeating Roger Shih and Peter Udall of Los Angeles 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Crabtree and Marble were defeated in the semifinals, however, by top-seeded John Lansville and Donald Wong of Los Angeles, 6-4, 6-0.
