Same-sex marriage opponents come up short
‘Protect Marriage’ ballot initiative fails to qualify for June ballot, supporters aim for November

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Supporters of an initiative to amend the state constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage said Dec. 21 that they didn’t get enough signatures to qualify the measure for the June ballot.
The supporters of the “Protect Marriage” initiative failed to gather the 598,105 signatures they needed by the Dec. 20 deadline, said Andrew Pugno, a lawyer for the campaign.
“There will not be a measure on the ballot this coming year,” Pugno told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families, told 365Gay.com he is not giving up and the organization will continue to fight in the courts.
“Whether it be November 2006 or sometime in 2008, it doesn’t matter,” he said.
The initiative’s failure leaves the issue of same-sex marriage in the hands of the courts.
Opponents of a state law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman have taken their fight to a state appeals court in San Francisco.
The case could reach the state Supreme Court by late next year. ![]()
