After 16 years, Laguna Trends says goodbye! Back in 1989, Laguna Trends opened its doors with the idea of selling cards and gifts in the Hillcrest community. The concept was to try to capture the flavor of Laguna Beach – the fusion of artsy products with high-end gifts. Sixteen years later, the business morphed into an urban market focusing on cards, candles, books, music, modern home accessories, toiletries and seasonal gifts for the holidays.

What sets the store apart from the competition is its strong mix of products, including a variety of cards not found in other venues and home décor items that fuse modern design with functionality. Additionally, their friendly, engaging style of customer service helped build a strong clientele base.

Laguna Trend’s owner for over three years, Dan Weinberg, said the age-old story of increasing overhead and decreasing revenue are signs of things to come. “I decided that rather than take the hit and create debt, it would be best to close,” he said.

Why close instead of sell? Weinberg said in today’s retail industry, small businesses don’t command a large ticket. A smart businessperson can orchestrate a big closeout sale and bring in a better return.

Leo Gonzales, who served as buyer and manager of Laguna Trends for over eight years and made the transition between owners, said the major change for him was the freedom to be creative in the product mix. “I am lucky to have had a boss who [trusted me] to run a business as if it were my own,” Gonzalez said.

Weinberg and Gonzalez said they are sad to close, but are thankful that the store is able to go out on top. “This community is incredible,” they said. “No other community in San Diego has the strength, personality and charm of Hillcrest. … It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve this community, be a part of the community and thrive for 16 years.”
