Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego to hold open rehearsals in January
Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego (GMCSD) kicks off its spring semester of song with open rehearsals on Wednesdays throughout January. Rehearsals begin each week at 7:00 p.m. at GMCSD’s regular rehearsal space inside the University Christian Church, located at 3900 Cleveland Ave., across the street from the Hillcrest Post Office. Those who attend will have the opportunity to find out about the GMCSD, meet current members, watch or participate in rehearsals and then consider joining the chorus themselves.
“We are thrilled to announce that our next concerts in April will be ‘Bang Bang: The Music of Cher!’ The chorus is experiencing incredible momentum right now, and we know that many talented singers will want to join us as we celebrate more than 40 years of music from pop’s quintessential diva,” artistic director Gay Holt said.
GMCSD president Robert Millar added: “We are enjoying an exciting season and I hope that even more singers and non-singers alike will join us. We are particularly interested in increasing our operations staff, and [are] looking for some dedicated folks who can spend a few hours on Wednesday evenings to volunteer with the Gay Men’s Chorus.”
Other upcoming concerts this season include a Pride concert in July and a French-themed show in August. For more information, call (619) 57-GMCSD.

Community Coalition Breakfast to focus on Military Readiness Enhancement Act
The Center’s monthly Community Coalition Breakfast, taking place on Friday, Jan. 20, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., will focus on the Military Readiness Act, HR 1059, introduced by Rep. Martin Meehan, D-Mass. The legislation would repeal the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which would allow lesbian, gay and bisexual service members to serve openly.
The featured speakers will be Admiral Al Steinman and Jim Maloney. Admiral Steinman is an honorary board member of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and one of the highest-ranking officers to disclose his homosexuality. Maloney is the director of the Military Education Initiative.
“The focus of this breakfast is especially important to San Diegans since so many within our community have been directly impacted by ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the previous ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual people serving in the military,” said AJ Davis, director of public policy for The Center. “This issue is especially relevant given the current needs of the U.S. armed forces at this time. As a result, more people are becoming aware that it makes no sense to continue to uphold a discriminatory policy that keeps willing and able Americans from serving.”
This Community Coalition Breakfast takes place the third Friday of each month. Its mission is to bring together fair-minded individuals to network, educate and discuss the diverse issues of concern to GLBT and allied neighbors and citizens of San Diego. A full breakfast is available for a $10 donation; coffee and tea are complimentary. RSVPs are not required. ASL interpretation will be provided upon request. Requests must be sent to Davis at adavis@thecentersd.org at least seven working days before the event.
For more information on SLDN, visit www.sldn.org. Visit www.military-education.org for information on the Military Education Initiative.
