San Diego Armada loses first league match 22-8
Published Thursday, 12-Jan-2006 in issue 942
The San Diego Armada Rugby Football Club fell to the L.A Rebellion 22-8 on Jan. 7 in their opening game of the season in Los Angeles. This was the first time these two teams have met since the Armada’s maiden game in October 2004. Both teams are members of the Southern California Rugby Football Union as well as the International Gay Rugby Association and Board.
The Armada started the game with only 14 players, but late arrivals allowed them to field a full team. Much of the game was spent in scrums, of which the Armada dominated. The Rebellion had a distinct advantage by fielding much more experienced players, and managed to use that advantage to score. The Armada played well in its first official league game, but was unable to overcome the Rebellion’s early lead.
The Armada’s next game will take place Saturday, Jan. 14, at Robb Field in Ocean Beach against the Finlanders.
The San Diego Armada is always recruiting new players. No previous experience is necessary and all body types and fitness levels are encouraged to participate. Practices take place at Robb Field in Ocean Beach on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and in Balboa Park on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for touch rugby. The Armada’s season spans January to April, and they are considering participating in the Bingham Cup in New York in May and the Gay Games in Chicago in July.
