Outfest screening at Current Affairs, Aug. 23
Outfest San Diego, our community’s annual GLBT film festival, will hold another free screening, Saturday, Aug. 23, at 8:00 p.m. at Current Affairs Bookstore in North Park. The film will be Tar Heels and Short Skirts, a fabulous documentary about the 2003 North Carolina Miss Gay USofA pageant. Like Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss World, etc., this pageant is similar, only it caters to the transgender community. For more information on the screening, contact Joe at (619) 269-5636
Mama’s Kitchen wine tasting, Aug. 21
On Thursday, Aug. 21, Mama’s Kitchen, a non-profit delivery service dedicated to providing nutritious meals 365 days a year to San Diegans affected by AIDS, will present Live…at Bourbon Street, their eighth annual wine tasting event. Proceeds from the event will help Mama’s Kitchen to continue to provide services to those affected by AIDS throughout San Diego County. The event will feature cabaret-style entertainment by Janice Edwards and Kenny Ard, as well as specialty wines and hors d’oeuvres from many fine local restaurants. The event will be held at Bourbon Street and begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $35, with all proceeds benefiting Mama’s Kitchen. Ebony Pride scheduled for Aug. 23
Ebony Pride will host SD Ebony Pride 2003, A Soul Enlightenment, San Diego’s annual GLBT and pansexual event for African-Americans, on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. and everyone is welcome. Ebony Pride will be held at Marston Point in Balboa Park near 4th Ave. Admission is $7. The day’s events will include workshops and seminars, a Hip-Hop/House dance party, cultural events, visual arts, a silent auction, fine arts and crafts, political action, a poetry jam, raffles, surprise guests, soul food and more. S.A.G.E. Roundup and fundraiser
Reservations are now being accepted for the S.A.G.E. weekend retreat and fundraiser, to be held at Stallion Oaks Ranch, Sept. 19-22. Reservation information is available by calling the S.A.G.E. Center at (619) 298-9900. Tickets for the Sunday Fundraiser are $35 each.
Bingo returns to The Center
On Aug. 7, 14 and 21, the doors of the auditorium at The Center on Centre Street open at 6:15 p.m. for all Bingo aficionados and newbies. The first game is played at 7:00 p.m. and games continue until around 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for a six-card game pad. Additional pads can be purchased for $5 each. Prizes for the first nine games are $50, and the last game pays $100. Beginning in September, Bingo will be held on the first three Tuesdays of every month.
Free financial planning seminar this Friday

Transpire to meet Aug. 9
Join Transpire for a transgender support group meeting on the second Saturday of each month. The next meeting will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the offices of Dawn Media, 2801 4th Ave. This group is intended to provide a casual, friendly, safe, nonjudgmental and supportive environment for all members and friends of the transgender community. All are welcome.

Smooth Jazz 98.1, Cush Jaguar and Sycuan Casino & Resort present Jody Watley and saxaphonist Jeff Kashiwa (the Rippingtons) on Friday, Aug. 22, at 4th & B. Watley’s latest CD, Midnight Lounge, has cuts with a deep, hypnotic groove that are perfect for listening or dancing. Watley has spanned decades in the music industry, performing with the band Shalamar and solo, making her an icon as well as a diva. Cyber Center now open
The David Bohnett Cyber Center at The Center is a free computer lab available to all members of the community. The Cyber Center provides free classes, mentoring, Internet access and use of the Microsoft Office Suite. Current hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 1:30-4:30 p.m., and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Special hours are available for youth and seniors, with specialized classes and instruction. Summer in the Park concerts at Trolley Barn Park
The “Summer In The Park” concert series at Trolley Barn Park continues. Bring a picnic dinner or sample the tasty eats of vendors in the park, located on the north side of Adams Ave. at Florida St. The concerts are held every Friday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m., through Aug. 29. The concerts are co-sponsored by local businesses and residents. No alcoholic beverages or glass containers are permitted. For more information, call (619) 297-3166. Upcoming performances include: Aug. 8, Bayou Brothers (Zydeco/Cajon/Mardi Gras); Aug. 15, Gatos Papacitos (Spanish/ Flamenco); Aug. 22, Sue Palmer (Boogie Woogie and Swing); Aug. 29, The Mar Dels (’50s, ’60s and ’70s music).
North American Conference on Bisexuality, Aug. 21-24
This year’s bisexuality conference, which will be held at the Radisson San Diego Hotel and run August 21-24, will kick-off on Thursday, Aug. 21, with three pre-conference institutes: a BiHealth Summit, providing a forum to discuss bisexual health, research and mental health issues affecting people behaving bisexually; a Bi People of Color Organizing Summit, which will discuss issue of race, class and sexuality and develop action steps to address the needs of people of color in the bisexual movement; and a Bi Youth Organizing Summit, lead by GLSEN’s Liza Castaneda and Jonathan Stack of DC-based Advocates for Youth.
