Gum: The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance presents a play partially inspired by a Middle Eastern rumor that chewing gum secretly contained Western aphrodisiacs to corrupt local women. Karen Hartman’s Gum follows two sisters struggling with their sexual awakening in a repressive society. Performances take place in the Mandell Weiss Forum Studio on the UCSD campus. Tickets are $10 to $15. Evening performances begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday. (858) 534-4574.
Gay Valentine’s cabaret: Schroeder’s Cabaret at the Westin Horton Plaza celebrates the musical delights of love and romance – with a twist. The Needemann Brothers, Anthony Bollotta and Jorge Luis Abreu, accompanied by musical director/arranger Rayme Sciaroni, present a gay-themed romantic Valentine’s celebration at this intimate New York-style venue. The Vagina Monologues: As part of the 2006 V-Day College Campaign, the students of San Diego State University present a benefit production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play to raise awareness and funds for local organizations working to end violence against women and girls. Showtimes are Friday at 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $14 and may be purchased at the Aztec Center on SDSU’s campus or at Obelisk Bookstore in Hillcrest. (619) 204-0847. Golf and wine: Spend a day on the beautiful course at Cottonwood Golf Club and take part in the Nine & Wine Golf Tournament. Couples and individual players of all skill level are welcome. Head to Toe Women’s Expo: This expo, which takes place Feb. 10-12, brings together a wealth of industries that cater specifically to women. With inspiring speakers, local celebrity chefs and over 250 exhibits, there’s something for everyone. Show hours are Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $7. Our Sister’s Voices: A collaborative performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues to benefit Sun & Moon Vision Productions’ Women Peace Maker Documentary Project features local female performers L-Train, Lisa Lipsey, Abby Schwartz and Marti Tucker, among others. The reception begins at 6:00 p.m. and curtain time is 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 for the show and reception, and $50 with a commemorative T-shirt. A Body of Water: The Old Globe Theatre presents this play about a man and a woman who awake in an unfamiliar house atop a mountain surrounded by water. And they have absolutely no memory of who they are or how they got there. Tickets are $37-$56. The play runs until March 19. The Old Globe Theatre is located in Balboa Park. Steve Poltz: The singer-songwriter started his career playing bars and coffee houses around San Diego before forming The Rugburns. He went solo and co-wrote some songs with Jewel, including her hit “You Were Meant for Me” in the ’90s. Poltz takes the stage at The Belly Up Tavern for an 8:00 p.m. show. Poetry & Art: The Museum of the Living Artist invites writers and artists to present their visual and written/spoken work. The quarterly event at the San Diego Art Institute will feature spoken word poet Ant Black and the arts collective The Readers Ensemble II, who will present “The Magritte Series,” poems by Kathleen Fraser, based upon selected paintings by surrealist artist Renee Magritte. Live music and food will also be featured at the event. Tickets are $5.
