I am so glad the Super Bowl is over. The only real sports I like are bullfighting and boxing. I hate football, but I do love some of the Super Bowl commercials.
Out GLBT veterans
This past Saturday night, I stopped by the 70th birthday of a good friend of mine, a World War II veteran named Carl Moccafiche. It was a nice reception for a very nice guy, held at Martinis Above Fourth (great hors d’oeuvres). Carl received a special commendation from popular Congressmember Susan Davis and recognition from state Senator Christine Kehoe and City Councilmember Toni Atkins. In lieu of gifts, Carl requested that we make a contribution to AVER (American Veterans for Equal Rights), our GLBT veterans group.
San Diego is home to thousands of GLBT veterans, including one of the few remaining Pearl Harbor veterans. Right now, there are thousands of gays and lesbians serving our country in the armed forces, including overseas. I personally knew three gay Marines who were killed in Iraq. We need to show our GLBT veterans and active-duty military service members more respect, and give them our support.
Happy 70th birthday, Carl. I’m proud to be your friend.
Toni Atkins to be honored on Friday
Our ever-popular former acting mayor, yes, City Councilmember Toni Atkins, will be honored by the national Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund of Washington, D.C., this Friday, Feb. 10, at the beautiful Bahia Resort Hotel. Toni will receive the Victory Fund’s prestigious Gay and Lesbian Leadership Award. Congratulations, Toni Atkins, on this well-deserved recognition and honor.

Wanted: Easter baskets!
This year’s fourth annual GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg Hunt will, for the first time, be brought to you jointly by the Imperial Court and The Center (with co-sponsor Family Matters). This is because the event is getting bigger every year (almost 400 attended the event at Trolley Barn Park last year), and, yes, because of last year’s incident with some of the volunteers and a staff member of San Diego Pride.
As co-founder of the GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, I want us to be as careful as possible, and make sure that we do not go through what, unfortunately, San Diego Pride had to go through.
Easter baskets are wanted! We will need hundreds of children’s Easter egg baskets, and we are collecting them already. Just drop them by The Center.
I hope that maybe our bars, businesses and organizations can donate Easter egg baskets or hold fund-raisers to buy some. Thank you! For further information, phone (619) 692-1967.
Lunch with David Rubin

Carl, a 70-year-old war veteran, receives a special commendation from Congressmember Susan Davis
I recently had lunch with Deputy District Attorney David Rubin, who is a candidate for judge. David is one of the most qualified candidates to run for judge in a long time. He already has the support of Sheriff Bill Kolender, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and other top elected officials.
David Rubin’s election should be a priority for our community, and I urge you to support his candidacy. One of David’s opponents will be former District Attorney Paul Pfingst, so this will be one hell of a race!
Family Matters
The face of our GLBT community is changing every year, with more GLBT people becoming parents. These days, I am invited to more children’s birthday parties than ever before!
Luckily for us, we have a great GLBT parents group, Family Matters, which welcomes all GBLT parents and their children to many of their events. For further information about Family Matters, phone (619) 298-5431.
About Valentine’s Day and couples
I most sincerely wish all GLBT couples a happy Valentine’s Day, and though I support those who want to get married, I, like many other people, in no way want to get married. I have had five relationships in my life, and I do not want any more – period. I am not faithful, nor can I ever be (I just love Marines), and I was never with my ex-boyfriends. For those who are and want to get married, you have my respect, but as for me, I could in no way eat the same meat every day for years.

The Nicky Awards
San Diego’s gay Academy Awards are coming up again, and plans are underway to celebrate three decades of honoring outstanding achievement in our community. Major changes are being planned to make the Nicky Awards more exciting and shorter.
The Nicky Awards has always been a benefit for numerous nonprofit organizations. The 2006 awards will be more fun, with speeches that will be a lot shorter! So get ready, San Diego, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nicky Awards!
