Sports fans in America’s Finest City now have two more reasons to cheer, as two women’s professional sports teams join forces to solidify women’s professional sports in San Diego.

The So Cal Scorpions, San Diego’s women’s professional football team, and the San Diego Siege, San Diego’s women’s professional basketball team, said they have agreed to a promotional partnership for 2006.

The Scorpions won the Western Division in the nationwide Women’s Professional Football League in 2005, and will kick off their 2006 season on July 29.

The Siege will host their home-opening game on Feb. 18 against the San Jose Spiders at 7:00 p.m. at City College, located at 1313 Park Blvd.

“This is great day for sports in San Diego. We are honored to be partnering with the Siege,” Scorpions team owner Ann Bagala said. “Both teams provide affordable, competitive sports entertainment for the whole family, and have phenomenal female athletes.

“The idea behind the partnership is to double both teams’ exposure,” she added. “Everyone in San Diego needs to know they have two more great teams to root for.”

Both teams play in nationwide leagues and play by virtually all of the same game rules as their male counterparts in the NBA and the NFL.

“We want to put San Diego on the map for women’s sports,” Scorpions marketing director Jody Taylor said. “The women on both of these teams are some of the best in their sport, and if you are looking to see great competition, follow both of these teams. You won’t be disappointed with the talent level or the entertainment on game day.”
