In the emergency room at the Dempsy Medical Center, a dazed and bloodied Brenda Martin (Julianne Moore) recounts to police detective Lorenzo Council (Samuel L. Jackson) a horrific tale of being carjacked on an isolated strip of undeveloped land. After hours of questioning, Brenda finally breaks down and confesses that her 4-year-old son, Cody, was asleep in the back seat of the stolen car.
