Did you know that March is designated as National Women’s History Month? Of course you did! But did you know that San Diego boasts its own “Celebrate Women’s Herstory Month” event, taking place this year on Sunday, March 26, at Kung Food (2939 Fifth Ave., at Quince)? Organized annually by local female rockers Danielle LoPresti, Kelly Bowen and Alicia Champion, this event is packed full of estrogen-driven musicians, dancers, visual artists, activists and female-owned businesses. Add Kung Food’s delicious vegan fare into the mix and you’ve got yourself one delectable and inspiring event to attend! This year’s performance lineup includes appearances from Danielle LoPresti and the Masses, Alicia Champion, Lauren DeRose, Elena, Sarah Green, Jane, Corday, Lisa Sanders, Cathryn Beeks Ordeal, The New Dadaists, Marsha Forman, Brooke Wilkes, Laura Preble and Gina Angelique of Eveoke Dance Theatre. There will even be a guest appearance from community activist Judy “The Beauty” Forman of the Big Kitchen (don’t miss her!). You can see all these talented women perform for the bargain price of $10 ($7 for students!), and still have a few bucks left over to try Kung Food’s yummy vegan pot-pie. What could be better than that? For more information on the event and updates on the lineup, check out LoPresti’s Web site, www.dlpm.com.
If you’re not familiar with some of these performers and want to know what their music is like, just jump on www.myspace.com! Most of the women performing at the Herstory event have profiles on myspace, so you can log on, listen to some tunes and even send your favorite performer a message to request a song – all for free. Myspace has quickly become the best place to discover new music and support starving indie artists. I should point out that it is also a great resource for queer women and men who are looking to connect online. If you haven’t delved into the new world that is myspace, you are totally missing out! As I sit writing this column, there are 21,062 queer groups to join on myspace, meaning you can find a group dedicated to just about anything queer-related. There are groups for boi dykes, bisexual femmes, lesbian activists, fag hags, leather lovers and much, much more. And although the site has come under attack lately, due to legitimate complaints that sex offenders are quickly able to target young victims online, I still think it is a great resource for GLBT teens and adults to connect with one another, network, find romance and explore what it means to be queer. By tomorrow, there will be more than 21,062 queer groups to join, because the online community is ever-growing. So if you’re not on myspace yet, get on there and create a profile for yourself, girl! The love of your life or your new best friend may be just an “Add Friend” click away!
In other music news, Beth Orton will make an appearance at San Diego’s House of Blues on March 23 in support of her new album, Comfort of Strangers. If you’re not familiar with Orton, check her out. She is a standout female singer-songwriter with a haunting, unique voice.
In other female-friendly news, The Center’s fourth annual Women’s Night is approaching quickly, and tickets are already on sale on The Center’s Web site. Join the celebration on Saturday, May 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the new NTC Promenade in Point Loma. The event will feature authentic Mediterranean cuisine, live entertainment and dancing, all in a luxurious setting filled with San Diego’s most interesting women.
The annual Women’s Night is a celebration of San Diego’s lesbian, bisexual and transgender women’s community, and is the only event of its kind in the county. The event recognizes local women who have made significant contributions to the LGBT community and benefits The Center’s Women’s Resource Center. Tickets are $150 per person, $250 VIP or $1,500 for a VIP table. For more information, contact Jennifer Jones at (619) 692-2077 ext. 204.

The fourth annual Women’s Lecture Series is also underway, with a handful of interesting lectures scheduled to take place at the Women’s Resource Center. This series welcomes professors from SDSU’s Women’s Studies Department, and includes the following topics: “What is the lesbian community? Does it ever exist, and how can we find one that fits our needs?” (March 16); “Lesbian Athletes – Negotiating Homophobia in Sports” (March 30); “From Invert to Butch – Sex, Gender and the Modern Lesbian” (April 6); and “Religion and Sexual Orientation” (April 20). Don’t miss this opportunity to “go back to school” and learn more about yourself! The lectures, which are free to attend, take place at 7:00 p.m. and include a light cookie snack.
Mango Much is a womyn, gender-queer music and events session, brought to you by DJ Phoenix. Tune in Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on RadioActive Radio. RadioActive San Diego is a collective, non-hierarchical organization formed to pioneer a new Internet radio station. The site plans to build a model for the post-corporate, autonomous community media of the future by offering revolutionary media production and distribution that creates positive social and economic change.
There will be a “Celebrate Women” fund-raiser for the Hot Monkey Love Café’s new location and for the Women’s Resource Center on Friday, March 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight at the Hot Monkey Love Café, located at 5860 El Cajon Blvd. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Artists include Lisa Sanders, Jamie Crawford, Forsakentruth, Squiddo, Aura and Drop Joy.
Dinah Shore Weekend, billed as “the largest lesbian gathering in the world,” will take place March 29 through April 2 in Palm Springs. This year’s event includes an array of nonstop parties featuring bikini-clad grrls, fruity drinks, go-go dancers and more. The celebrity entertainment lineup includes performances from The Pussycat Dolls, Margaret Cho, En Vogue, Kathy Najimi and Mo Gaffney and Amber. And a word of caution before you buy your tickets: The two original promoters of Dinah Shore Weekend, Club Skirts and GirlBar, have split, and are offering separate Dinah events this year. Both promoters’ Dinah Shore Web sites are full of hotel and travel information and hints (www.thedinah.com or www.dinahshoreweekend.com), but when you visit the Web sites above, make sure you are buying tickets from the right promoters for the events that you want to go to!

The month of March at Six Degrees is looking good, starting this week with the St. Patrick’s Day Bash on Friday! Throw on your favorite green shirt and make your way down to the bar to hear the sweet sounds of Drop Joy at 8:00 p.m. Of course, the March event that I’m most excited about is the Sushi & Sake Slam, which takes place Saturday, March 25. I don’t know the exact details, but if they’ve got raw fish and crazy milk (unfiltered sake), I’m most definitely there! Also, don’t miss a hot performance from the S.D. Kings Club, which takes place on Friday, March 24.
Wednesday nights are heating up at Beauty Bar San Diego (4746 El Cajon Blvd.), thanks to DJ Robin Roth’s 007-inspired “Club Pussy Galore”! If you haven’t been by the Beauty Bar yet, swing by on a Wednesday night (9:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.) for go-go girls, pussy shots (half price if you say, “I love pussy” at the bar!), and tons of beautiful hipster girls. You can even get a manicure while you’re drinking with your friends! And best of all, there’s no cover. Pussies unite!
That’s it on my end for this month. Enjoy the March madness, and don’t forget to e-mail me at editor@uptownpub.com with any events, questions or suggestions. I’ll see you at Pussy Galore!
