Pride presents $15,000 to San Diego Foundation for Change
Last week, San Diego LGBT Pride presented $15,000 to the San Diego Foundation for Change, raising the total amount of money it has given the grant-giving organization to $173,360 since 1996.
Pride donations since then have funded 42 grants to local GLBT grassroots organizations through the foundation, which supports community-led efforts that promote social equality, economic justice and environmental sustainability.
“The donation represents the philanthropic element of the annual Pride celebration, and marks 11 years of giving by Pride to the foundation,” said Ron deHarte, executive director of San Diego LGBT Pride. “These organizations provide important services to our community, and we have been proud to support them with private donations.”
To date, donations to the local GLBT community by Pride have topped the $1 million mark. Last year, it dispersed nearly $200,000 to such organizations as The Center, Auntie Helen’s, Diversionary Theatre, Elder Help of San Diego and the Gay Men’s Chorus, among others.
“It’s not possible to predict future giving. However, the community’s support of Pride’s annual festival makes charitable giving possible,” deHarte said. “We look forward to the community once again coming out and helping us make the 2006 Pride celebration a great success for our city.”
The year’s Pride celebration, titled “Equal Rights! No Turning Back!,” is scheduled for July 28-31. It will include a mile-long parade with giant balloons sponsored by businesses and organizations, a two-day festival with multiple performance stages and various arts events and Pride parties.
Pride is also seeking volunteers to sign up for the beer gardens, safety (crowd control, monitors, security) and ticket sales. For more information, call the Pride office at (619) 297-7683 or visit the Web site at www.sdpride.org.
Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego will celebrate the music of Cher
The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego’s spring concert series, entitled “Bang! Bang! The Music of Cher,” will return to the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre in La Jolla, April 8-9.
“Cher has given us four decades of chart-topping hits, and ‘Bang! Bang!’ will be our musical tributes to this amazing diva,” said Gary Holt, the chorus’ artistic director. “She has become a larger-than-life personality, and for many gay men it’s easy to relate to Jack McFarland’s girlish glee when he worships at Cher’s altar on ‘Will & Grace.’ Her music encompasses nearly every genre from teen-pop to folk rock, and her songs weave magical stories and fill us all with hope.”
Tickets are $28 for Saturday, April 8 and $23 for Sunday, April 9, with a $5 discount at the box office for military, students, and seniors 60 and over. Groups of 10 or more can receive $5 off per ticket when ordering in advance at one time. For tickets, call Obelisk Bookstore (619) 297-4171, the chorus office (619) 574-6273 or the Jewish Community Center box office at (858) 362-1348.
Pharmacy relocates, expands services and resources
Priority, a MOMS Pharmacy, will be relocating closer to the heart of Hillcrest. The pharmacy’s new address is 3940 Fourth Ave., Suite 150 (beneath Martinis Above Fourth). Pharmacy contact numbers will remain the same: (619) 688-2230 and (800) 487-7115.
The new site features free customer parking in the rear alley. Business hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“Since day one of acquiring Priority, we’ve been committed to maintaining an active role and participating in the health and well-being of the local community,” said Anthony Luna, regional vice president of MOMS. “Our new location allows us to expand the educational and community resource services that provide valuable information to our clients and the local community.”
Luna also said MOMS will retain the Priority name for its San Diego location.
In addition to offering insurance reimbursement advice and free home/office and vacation delivery services, MOMS has developed many programs to help providers and patients better manage the care and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
“With a focus and commitment to medication adherence and convenience, our services are designed to create peace of mind for both patients and health care providers alike,” Luna said.
The pharmacy offers a software and adherence packaging system called the MOMSPak, which is available to clients at no charge. The program supplies individual medication packets that indicate the patient’s name, medication contents, and the precise date and time the medication is to be taken. The MOMSPak has been recognized nationally as an innovative adherence and convenience tool that allows people with HIV/AIDS to better manage their medicines with ease, and eliminates the stress of remembering to take various medications from multiple containers throughout the day.
Seminar: ‘Learning to Value Yourself in a Devaluing World’
A special workshop entitled “Learning to Value Yourself in a Devaluing World” takes place at The Center on Thursday, March 30, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The seminar, which is free to attend, will be presented by Dr. Sheryl Dagang.
“As LGBT people, we live, work, love, survive and thrive in a world that continually informs us of our ‘less-than’ status,” said Dagang, a clinical psychologist with The Center’s Health Services. “We are bombarded with messages from television, movies, radio and other media, as well as spiritual communities and friends and family, that we do not deserve equal rights or even equal protection. We will examine the insidious nature of these messages as well as begin to formulate ways in which we – as individuals and as a community – can create spaces in which we experience and celebrate our value.”
For more information on the workshop, contact Dr. Sheryl Dagang at (619) 260-6380 ext. 110 or sdagang@thecentersd.org. Or contact Caroline Higgins at (619) 260-6380 ext. 105 or chiggins@thecentersd.org.
