San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was in San Diego March 23 for a $500-a-plate luncheon at Baja Betty’s to raise money for his re-election campaign.
Thursday’s luncheon, which raised more than $10,000, was the second San Diego fund-raiser for Newsom. The total the San Francisco mayor has raised in San Diego now tops $30,000.
Newsom, seen by many as a rising star in the Democratic Party with possible future runs for U.S. Senate or governor, was introduced by City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez as “the future of the Democratic Party, not just in California but in the nation.”
City Councilmember Toni Atkins issued a proclamation naming March 23 “Mayor Gavin Newsom Day” in District 3.
At the luncheon, Newsom told the predominantly GLBT audience that he had been officially invited to Rome to witness the installation of Cardinal William Levada, the former archbishop of San Francisco, but cancelled his trip when Pope Benedict XVI came out against gays and lesbians adopting children.
Luncheon co-chairs were: City Commissioner Bruce Abrams, Kevin Tilden, Robert Gleason and Murray-Ramirez.
