Mayor Jerry Sanders attended a private reception on Sunday held in honor of the newly elected chair of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission, Nicole Murray-Ramirez.
Murray-Ramirez, a city commissioner, is the first openly gay man to hold the position.
Among those who attended the reception were state Senator Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, Assemblymember Lori Saldaña, D-San Diego, Councilmember Ben Hueso, and former City Councilmembers Valerie Stallings and George Stevens.
The reception took place at the home of City Commissioner Bruce Abrams, and included a buffet catered by Sherman Mendoza of The Caliph.
District 8 Councilmember Hueso told guests that Murray-Ramirez has been a longtime activist and fund-raiser for the Latino community, and issued a proclamation declaring March 26 “City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez Day” in the predominantly Latino council district.
Murray-Ramirez requested guests bring Easter baskets to the reception to donate to the annual GLBT Community Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, and more than 80 filled baskets were donated.
